Learning Assistant Interest Form Fall 2025

Welcome to the College of IST’s Learning Assistant interest form! This form is for undergraduate students interested in the following position: Learning Assistant (LA).

The primary requirements are

  • knowledge of content
  • familiarity and success with the course, preferably with the course as taught by a particular instructor

The assistant may be asked to help with in-class activities, specialized software or virtual labs, feedback on writing, grading (assuming a rubric is provided), out-of-class tutoring, and other learning-focused responsibilities.

Successful undergraduates are highly skilled, advanced students who meet a strict set of qualifications:

  • Grade of A- or A in the assigned course
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher

All LAs will have the opportunity to be paid, including first year LAs. Rate of compensation is as follows:

  • Estimated $13/hour (subject to change) for all first time LAs
  • Estimated $14/hour (subject to change) for all returning LAs

LAs must also complete the PSU job application, in addition to filling out this interest form (for information, see here: https://learning.ist.psu.edu/la/description-application). The link to the PSU jobs application will be sent to your PSU email account once a match is made with a course/professor.

LAs who are scheduled for their first semester of LA service for the College of IST are required to attend an orientation and take IST 389, the training course for LA’s. The class meets for the first half of the semester only. You will be registered by a staff member for either one of these sections:

  • Wednesday from 4:00 - 5:40 pm
  • Thursdays from 4:35 - 6:15 pm

Please indicate on your interest form which section fits your schedule best.

Unless negotiated otherwise, the successful LA's schedule must be open during the time that the course for which they are working meets. They must make sure that their scholarships, work study positions, visa status, and internships will permit them to work the number of hours assigned. Notification of offers will be emailed to your PSU email address approximately one to two weeks prior to the start of the semester.

If you think you might, but are unsure you will be able to meet the graduation requirements, please choose possibly.

This is your current cumulative GPA for all courses (not just the courses in your major). Here are two exceptions:

  • If you are first semester student and anticipate that you will receive a 3.2 GPA or better for this semester, feel free to apply and type "first semester" below.
  • If you currently have a GPA lower than 3.2 but believe it will be a 3.2 or better at the end of this semester, feel free to apply and type your current GPA and the words "check at the end of the semester"

Please choose at least one but no more than ten.

All NEW Learning Assistants are required to take IST 389. Students will be registered for the appropriate amount of credits by the program coordinator (you can not register for the course yourself). Are you able to attend the class that meets the first seven weeks of the semester?

Are you able to arrange your schedule to attend the LA virtual orientation on the Sunday, August 24 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm? This will be held via Zoom.

Are you able to arrange your schedule to attend the Tech Tools Training on Tuesday, August 26 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm? This will be held via Zoom.

By selecting yes, you may receive information on becoming a tutor and a link to the tutor interest form.

Please note you can still apply if any of the following are true:

  • If you are a first semester student and anticipate that you will receive a 3.2 GPA or better for this semester and an A or A- in the course you want to assist in
  • If you currently have a GPA lower than 3.2 but believe it will be a 3.2 or better at the end of this semester
  • If you are currently taking the course you want to support and believe you will receive an A or A- in that course
