18th Street Arts Center Visiting Artist Residency Application

Program Overview

18th Street Arts Center’s (18SAC) visiting artist residency program has hosted more than 500 artists from dozens of countries around the world since it first began in 1992. There are several live/work artist studios at the center where artists are in residence during the following times:

1st period: January-February-March

2nd period: April-May

3rd period: August

4th period: September-October-November

This program hosts artists of all disciplines as well as art curators, writers, and musicians. It includes invited artists as well as artists selected through this application process.

18SAC accepts applications from working, professional artists who demonstrate a deep commitment to their practices. Each resident artist is provided with a fully furnished live/work studio apartment at our center, with wifi, a bike, a kitchen, and a private bath. 18SAC is located blocks away from the beach in sunny Santa Monica and in the midst of the exciting, vigorous Los Angeles arts community. Each studio is differently configured, and spacious enough to present artwork as an open studio.

Artists are prominently represented on our website and event postings and in our annual print catalog. The program is open to artists of all generations, nationalities, and disciplines.

Many international artists have access to funding through their cultural ministries or other programs, and 18SAC encourages them to apply to cover the costs of the residency through various funding programs. In some cases, 18SAC has agreements with cultural ministries to underwrite artist residencies. Artists may also choose to cover the basic costs of the residency themselves. For a list of international residency funders, please visit the funding resources page at Res Artis or the Alliance for Artist Communities

Generally, the studios are booked 1 year to 18 months in advance of an artist’s arrival. However, opportunities may arise within a period of months if there is a sudden vacancy. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and reviewed quarterly. 18SAC only contacts artists whose applications are deemed a good fit for the program.

Visiting artists selected on the basis of applications are funded on a case-by-case basis, often through direct grants made to artists by government or nonprofit funders they have approached. Many international artists have access to funding through their cultural ministries or other programs, and we work with artists to secure funding or encourage them to apply to cover the costs of the residency through various funding programs. In some cases, we have agreements with cultural ministries and other funders to underwrite artist residencies. Artists may also choose to cover the basic costs of the residency themselves. For a list of international residency funders, please visit the funding resources page at Res Artis or the Alliance for Artist Communities for tips on funding and applying. Note that there are studio rental fees in addition to living and travel costs. Please write one paragraph identifying any funding bodies that you are approaching to support the residency.

Please tell us a little bit more about your work and you as an artist.
