2024 Point-In-Time (PIT) Count Hub Volunteer Sign-Up

The King County Regional Homelessness Authority (KCRHA) is seeking volunteers for the annual PIT Count. This is a count of the number of unhoused people across all municipalities, as mandated by the Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The data collected from this count is used to inform HUD on funding for programs and services.

This year, KCRHA and the University of Washington (UW) have received approval from HUD to extend the previous one-night count to two weeks to reach and connect with more people across the county.

We aim to survey over 1,000 individuals/households across our large and diverse county.

In order to do this, we are seeking people who to volunteer for up to 4 hours per day for one or two weeks between January 22 and February 2. There are morning and evening shifts available.

All volunteers will attend at least one 2-3 hour in-person or online training (each session is offered in-person and online) in early January. Dates for these trainings will be provided at a later date.

Volunteers are needed to staff 16 "Hub" sites throughout King County between January 22nd and February 2nd, 2024. These locations are spread across the different subregions of King County. You will be asked below to identify which parts of the county you are available to volunteer in.

Volunteer roles include:

  • Surveyors/Interviewers
  • Hub site leads
  • Supply and Tech Support

Additionally, we're looking for volunteers with a reliable car and valid WA driver's license who can travel throughout the county to support or to distribute supplies (ranging from pens and paper to heavy items like signage and water bottles).

Volunteers will be notified of their assignment by January 8.

Getting to know you!

Please take a few minutes to complete the information below so we can register you as a volunteer.

Provide a reliable number to contact you between now and the end of PIT Count (February 2024) for mass volunteer communication.

Role Selection

Please select all roles that you are interested in. Note that the final question is not a role, and may be combined with any of the roles selected.

Are you interested in being a Hub Site Lead?*

Hub Site Leads are the person in charge of the operations of a Hub Site. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Being on site 4 to 8 hours on days of volunteering
  • Attending daily huddle phone calls
  • Setting up and taking down materials at the site
  • Serving as the point of contact for a site
  • Supporting Surveyors/Interviewers as needed
  • Communicating supply and logistic needs to the Regional Coordinator
  • Managing and securing materials on site
Are you interested in being a Surveyor at one of the Hub Sites?*

Surveyors are the main people collecting survey information. This will include:

  • Being on-site for approximately 4 hours on days of volunteering
  • Greeting and engaging with people experiencing unsheltered homelessness
  • Administering the survey on provided tablets
  • Using phone translation services to administer surveys to people who primarily speak a language other than English
  • Distributing materials to people who are interviewed
Are you interested in being a Surveyor for our Phone Line?*

We will have a limited number of volunteer positions for our Phone Line.

Phone Line Surveyors Surveyors are the main people collecting survey information for our Families With children. This will include:

  • Being at the KCRHA Office approximately 4 hours on days of volunteering
  • Greeting and engaging with callers over the phone
  • Administering the survey verbally over the phone and collecting data on provided tablets
  • Using phone translation services to administer surveys to people who primarily speak a language other than English
  • Logging call information for the distribution of materials to people who are interviewed
Are you interested in being a Supply and/or Tech Support Volunteer?*

There are a lot of moving parts in the physical and virtual world for this project. Supply and Tech Support volunteers will help ensure that hub sites have the supplies and functioning technology required to collect surveys. The requirements of this role will vary but may include:

  • Being a point of contact for Hub Leads when they need additional supplies
  • Stock resupply boxes at the KCRHA offices to be distributed to hubs
  • Hand out resupply boxes to people working at hubs
  • Provide over-the-phone troubleshooting for technology being used in the field
  • Maintain supply logs for materials distributed to sites
Are you interested and able to drive materials between sites?*

At times we will need to distribute supplies from the KCRHA office to hubs, and vice-versa. If you are willing to support this function during the PIT, you must have a valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle. Selecting "yes" below indicates that you meet this requirement.

Additional Information

Do you speak a language other than English?

King County is home to a large diversity of languages. We know that many of our unhoused neighbors speak a language other than English. All volunteers will have access to a phone interpreter and are not required to speak another language. If you do speak another language and are willing to use that skill to support the PIT, please select "Yes" below.

Please list all languages you are fluent in other than English.

In order to have a representative sample of those experiencing unsheltered homelessness, we are particularly interested in volunteers with lived or working experience with these populations.
