RMIT School of Engineering:

Student Projects (Internal Submission)

You have been invited to submit a project that can provide an authentic Work-integrated Learning (WIL) experience for our engineering students. Projects must offer realistic, challenging, yet achievable engineering problems for individuals or teams of students.

As you know, there are two main cohorts which can be engaged for a project, as outlined below:

Capstone Projects (Undergraduate Students)

  • Students are in their final year of their chosen engineering degree
  • Students work in teams of typically 3 – 5
  • Teams can be of mixed engineering discipline (multidisciplinary)
  • These students work on an engineering specific issue/problem over two semesters (eg. Semester 1, 2024 & Semester 2, 2024 / Semester 2, 2024 – Semester 1, 2025)
  • Students are supervised by an RMIT academic
  • Teams are required to meet with their industry partner on a regular basis to discuss progress, ask questions and receive data.
  • A WIL agreement will be required to be signed by all parties involved (eg. RMIT, the participating students, and, if involved, the Industry Partner)

To see examples of past projects, please explore our EnGenius event from 2024

Masters Projects (Postgraduate Students)

  • Students work individually
  • Students can work on projects in one or two semesters, depending on scope
  • Students are supervised by an RMIT academic
  • Students are required to meet with their industry partner on a regular basis to discuss progress, ask questions and receive data.
  •  A WIL agreement will be required to be signed by all parties involved (eg. RMIT, the participating student, and, if involved, the Industry Partner)

Please note. the term "internal project" refers to projects that do not have an industry partner involved as a stakeholder. This is important to clarify in order to correctly identify and process WIL compliance documentation. Thank you for your cooperation.

If you have any questions about this process, please contact the STEM College Industry Engagement team.

Welcome

This form is intended for RMIT staff to submit internal projects. If you are from industry, or are working with an industry partner, please access the Industry Submission form here.

I confirm I am submitting an internal project*

Please note:

Industry Partner Project

Please head over to our Industry Partner Project submission form.

Are you an?*
If you are an academic, are you the supervisor of the project?

If you are not the supervisor, supervisor allocation will occur as per your school's approach. Please reach out to the course coordinator if you have any questions.

To adequately meet WIL compliance guidelines, it is important to identify who will own the Intellectual Property (IP) generated from this project. Please specify one of the following options to best assist our WIL agreements team in managing this project.

Please note that the default IP arrangement for internal projects is that “RMIT owns the IP”, as per RMIT's IP Policy

If an Industry Partner is to own the IP, please head over to our Industry Partner project submission form.

- Any resources available to the student - Are there any confidential Data or information? - Do you have other requirements such as a police check, WWCC or Citizenship requirements?

Would you be happy for multiple teams to work on your project?

Note: It will be multiple teams working on the same project.

What is your preferred working format?*

Onsite (Working/visit to a premise required) Online (Working entirely remote) Hybrid (Working online and some site visits required including data collection requirements) Please select Onsite/Hybrid if there is any requirement for a visit to any premise (RMIT/Industry). This is essential to organise any required permits. Note: Onsite & Hybrid format require a Covid Safety plan and our agreements team will help with this!

Note: please detail activities students may be required to undertake as apart of this project beyond the classroom

(eg. field visit, lab participation, other external face-to-face requirements, etc.)

Are there scholarships, possible future work available afterwards etc. that you would like the students to know about?

Please upload any additional information you consider relevant to this project
