How it works:
In keeping with our donor's request, these funds are eligible for organizations operating and feeding within the following geographic area: Culpepper, Rappahannock, and Fauquier counties.
Apply for a grant of a monetary amount that your organization is committed to matching 1:1 with your own funding.
Applications will be reviewed by a grant committee of MAFRAC stakeholders. Committee members or MAFRAC team members may reach out with additional questions or clarifications on your application.
If approved, MAFRAC will match your funds. Funds will be used to purchase healthy foods at local farms and producers within 2 months of approval notification.
Food your organization purchases (or donates if a farm/business) will be served to those in need at a hunger relief organization (HGO).
Your organization will make every effort to strengthen relationships with the farms, businesses, or HROs made through this grant opportunity. Your organization will commit to learning more about the local food system through videos, presentations, and flyers provided by MAFRAC and make every effort to educate your customers on the same.
The details:
At least 90% of the total funds will go directly to the purchase of locally grown or produced foods. A maximum of 10% of the total funds may be used for any overhead required to get the food to those in need.
Funds must be spent within 2 months of notification. Invoices and reports are due to MAFRAC within 3 months of notification. You may have the opportunity to apply again as there is currently no limit on the number of times you may apply and be awarded funds.
Each applicant may apply for a minimum of $250 (for a total of $500 to be spent on local foods) and a maximum of $2,500 (for a total of $5,000 to be spent). If you are awarded a grant, you will be required to submit a report to MAFRAC within 60 days documenting how the funds were utilized so we may share your great work to demonstrate why we are deserving of future funding. You may also be asked to present your project to MAFRAC stakeholders. Organizations that do not submit reports will not be eligible for a subsequent grant.
Example of how this will work if your grant application is approved and you are a HRO (dollar amounts are examples):
- Your organization commits to providing $1,000
- MAFRAC will provide $1,000
- A total of $2,000 to be spent towards your project.
- A minimum of 90% ($1,800) will go directly to the purchase of local foods.
- A maximum of 10% ($200) may be utilized for any overhead costs related to this project.
- Upon grant approval, you will sign a letter of agreement confirming the monetary amount your organization is committed to funding and MAFRAC’s commitment. You will also provide your organization’s W-9.
*Once funds have been spent, you will provide MAFRAC with receipts demonstrating at least 90% ($1,800) has been spent on local foods as well as a MAFRAC Grant Report. MAFRAC will confirm and approve your invoice, and will reimburse your organization 50% ($1,000) within 30 days of that approval.
