Risk Management

The majority of child sexual abuse is perpetrated in isolated, one-on-one situations. By reducing such interactions between children and adults, you reduce the risk of child sexual abuse. However, ASU also knows that sometimes, one-on-one situations are unavoidable (like after programming when only one youth remains, etc.) and sometimes, one-on-one situations are part of the program design (like with tutoring, coaching, mentoring, etc.).

In those situations where one-on-one interactions is unavoidable and approved, the Sponsoring Department must take the following safeguards to ensure the minors are safe and protected during the one-to-one interactions.

Prior to engaging in any approved one-to-one interaction, Sponsoring Department should notify the parent or legal guardian of the minor. This notification should clearly outline the nature of the interaction, including its purpose, duration, location and any activities involved.

All communication with the minor and/or regarding one-to-one interactions between staff and minors must copy the parent or guardian.

Interaction cannot take place in closed offices, personal vehicles, or spaces with no visibility.

And if anything unusual or troubling comes up during the meeting, report it to your supervisor immediately. Report-worthy incidents include disclosures of abuse or maltreatment, behavior problems (and a report of how they were handled) and injuries. Furthermore, immediately report the details of any interactions that the youth could interpret as inappropriate, such as an accidental brush of your hand across the youth’s leg.

  1. Incidents of abuse or neglect must be to the Arizona Child Abuse Hotline.
  2. Report the incident to your Supervisor and Dean/Director.
  3. Report the incident to the Youth Protection Program.
