The Special Collections Reading Room is open by appointment only, Monday - Friday, 9 AM - 4 PM.


The Special Collections Department requests a lead time of 24-48 business hours for research requests and access to the reading room. Contact Special Collections if you need to change or cancel your appointment after it has been confirmed.


Reading Room and USF Herbarium visitors must request materials in advance using Aeon. After logging in or creating an account, use Monograph/Book or Serial/Periodical for published materials. Use Manuscript/Archives to request all other materials. Contact Special Collections at spcinfo@usf.edu if you need assistance.

For more than 50 years, Special Collections has supported the University of South Florida by encouraging use of primary resources that document the history and culture of both USF and the broader community. With a strong focus on local and regional records, artifacts, and publications, Special Collections is also home to numerous collections of national and international prominence that describe and contextualize diverse experiences from the 1500s to the present day.

Herbarium


The USF Herbarium, with more than 270,000 specimens, is the second largest collection in Florida, the seventh largest in the southeastern United States, and ranks in the upper third of the world's herbaria in size. The collection consists of more than 250,000 specimens of vascular plants, 17,000 algae, and 2,000 bryophytes and lichens. The collection is richest in plants from Florida (40%), with strong holdings from North America north of Mexico (37%) and Latin America (13%). It has the largest collection in the world of materials from central and southern Florida.
