GARDEN RULES

Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi has established garden plots on its campus that are available, subject to the Rules established by the Environmental, Health & Safety department, for recreational gardening by individuals and groups. The availability of garden plots, the design of the garden, including the size, configuration, and assignment of the garden plots, are the responsibility of the Sustainability Student Workers.

GENERAL RULES

1. Gardeners and their use of the Islander Gardens are subject to the Regulations and Policies of the University and to the Garden Rules contained in this document. 2. Gardening season will extend from the Fall semester through the end of Summer II. (September - August) 3. Gardeners are encouraged to participate in Garden workdays, and other community gardening events. 4. All gardeners should display common courtesy towards others, including respect for shared materials and spaces. 5. Gardeners must park their cars in the parking area adjacent to the Islander Gardens. Vehicles should not be parked in this area unless the gardener is present in the gardens. 6. Gardeners are reminded to use good safety practices when visiting the Islander Gardens. 7. Children are welcome at the garden when accompanied and fully supervised by an adult. 8. Dogs and other pets are not permitted at the Islander Garden. 9. NO illicit drugs, alcohol or any form of tobacco is allowed within the Islander Gardens. NO SMOKING. 10. No fires are allowed. 11. E,H&S reserves the right to change these Islander Garden Rules and regulations at any time. Notice of such changes will be available on the Islander Green website: https://islandergreen.tamucc.edu/

ASSIGNMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF PLOTS

1. Gardeners are required to complete and submit a Gardener Agreement form at the beginning of each season (September). 2. The university retains the right to establish plots designated for, and/or set aside for use by students/student groups. General assignments of available plots in the Islander Garden will be as follows: Priority for plot assignments will be on a first- come/ first-serve basis and favor student gardeners over staff. Funding for the islander gardens comes from students tuition, the more students involved with the garden facilities allow for more investment in the space. 3. Plot requests are filled according to the order in which the completed application form is received. A waiting list will be maintained for applicants for whom no plot was available. 4. Gardeners will be assigned only one plot; during each season, one plot will be equal to one rectangle bed. Staff gardeners who have been with the garden for more than one season may maintain their plots. 5. Assigned garden plots are not transferable. Gardeners may not give their plot to another person. 6. All gardeners must leave the pathway between each individual garden free from obstruction. 7. Gardeners must visit their plots bi-monthly and record their visits, failure to do so or will result in the plot being considered abandoned. Abandoned plots will be cleared and made available for reassignment. Gardeners will notify the Environmental, Health & Safety (E,H&S) office at 361-825-5555 if they decide not to plant their assigned plot. 8. Violation of garden guidelines: If any of the rules, regulations, or policies are violated, you will be contacted via phone or email and have one week to address the violation. After one week, if the violation has not been remedied, you will lose your gardening privileges.

START OF SEASON- Fall Semester

1. Gardeners must keep their plot(s) planted, weeded and harvested during the gardening season. 2. Gardeners should contact the Sustainability Student Worker if they will be moving, taking an extended vacation, or otherwise unable to maintain their plot for an extended period of time. Failure to contact the EHS office will result in reassignment.

END OF SEASON- Summer II Semester

1. At the end of the season, all dead plants and weeds should be removed and placed in the appropriate composting collection site. 2. All non-plant materials such as stakes or rocks/ bricks must be removed from the gardens. 3. Any materials left after the end of the season will be considered rubbish and disposed of.

GARDENING RULES

GARDEN PLOTS: 1. Gardeners will follow organic gardening principles. The use of synthetic fertilizers, insecticides or weed repellent is prohibited. Questions about the use of any garden additives should be directed to Sustainability Student Worker before the product is used. 2. Do not tend to or harvest another gardener's plot without their consent. 3. Gardeners agree to keep the garden and garden edges free of weeds, diseased plants, insect-infested plants and over-ripe vegetables. 4. Do not plant cacti, trees, shrubs, or any large perennial plant that would grow bigger than the box could handle. 5. Do not add any type of rocks or gravel such as landscape stone or cobbles. 6. Glass containers are prohibited, in addition, plastic containers or bags of any kind should be secured as not to blow around and/or detract from the orderliness of the garden. 7. Using or growing illegal substances in the Islander Gardens will lead to loss of gardening privileges and possible criminal charges. 8. Gardeners are responsible for the purchase of their own seeds. WATERING: 9. Islander Gardens will provide water and hoses for shared use by the gardeners. Do not leave the water on or unattended. Watering is discouraged in the afternoon due to the high rate of evaporation. GARDEN WASTE: 10. All trash shall be placed in the trash container near the garden. 11. Plant debris should be composted in the appropriate collection area, behind the tool shed. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT: 12. Tools will be provided by the Islander Garden. Please clean and return all tools.

In case of an emergency, or to report vandalism or suspicious activity call the University Police Department at 361-825-4444.


LIABILITY WAIVER

I AGREE TO HOLD HARMLESS Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, its trustees, employees and officers FOR ANY LIABILITY, INJURY, DAMAGE, LOSS OR CLAIM THAT OCCURS IN CONNECTION WITH THE USE OF THE ISLANDER GREEN GARDENS BY ME OR ANY OF MY GUESTS.

by the above Islander Garden Rules. I understand that failure to abide by these rules will result in forfeiture of my gardening privileges. Rules and decisions governing the Islander Gardens will be made by the Environmental, Health and Safety office on behalf of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
