Sonoran Desert Tortoise Adoption Application

Application Instructions :

*You must be an Arizona resident to adopt and your adopted tortoise must remain in Arizona.

**YOUR BURROW MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR APPLICATION.

Familiarize yourself with desert tortoise care
Construct a secure enclosure for a desert tortoise or have a fenced-in yard with self sustaining grass.
300 sq ft for an adult
60 sq ft for a juvenile
10-15 sq ft for a hatchling (with a predator proof top)
Construct an appropriate burrow that will protect the desert tortoise from extreme temperatures.
Take photos of the following:
overall view of the tortoise enclosure
completed burrow
shade access (plants or constructed shade)
placement of water dish and access to food
security measures (gates, fenced in pool, fenced in fire pit)
diagram of the enclosure with dimensions (length x width in feet)
Make your backyard safe from potential hazards (fenced in pool or fire pit, barrier from toxic plants or chemicals, tortoise enclosure is separated from dogs, no poultry wire or welded wire larger than 1/2"x1/2" without a solid barrier (tortoises can get head/leg stuck), ability to restrict or monitor access to artificial turf (tortoises may try to eat it, resulting in costly vet bills).
Have a plan in place if you can no longer care for the tortoise
Be prepared to provide the necessary veterinary care for the tortoise

*Applications will be reviewed to ensure adoptable tortoises are placed in best-fit homes and approved pending tortoise availability. Applications may take up to 14 days to be reviewed, we will contact you by email (check your SPAM).

*If you are applying in late October a tortoise may not become available until spring, following the brumation period.
