Maryland Reading Celebration Day: Friday, April 14th in the Stamp Student Union
Each year, nearly 350 Prince George's County elementary school students visit the University of Maryland campus to celebrate their achievements and learn more about college. Volunteers have the opportunity to participate in small group reading and facilitiate afternoon literacy activities. **A book is selected as the theme of the day and students engage in literacy and creative activities that reflect the content or message of the book. This year's book is The Good Egg by Jory John. Past books have included Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Peña, Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin, and Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina.** More than 300 campus members volunteer each year to help make this event a success!
Maryland Math Celebration Day: Friday, April 28th in the Stamp Student Union from
Each year, approximately 250 Prince George's County elementary school students visit the University of Maryland campus to celebrate the year's accomplishments and learn about college. On Maryland Counts Day, students experience the concepts of math in real world contexts through activities and demonstrations with various campus offices and departments. Volunteers will have the opportunity facilitate a math station in topics including Geometry, place value, division, fractions, etc. ** In the past several years, partners for this event have included the School of Architecture, Fire Protection Engineering, Department of Bioengineering, the Adventure Program, the UMD Farm, Alternative Breaks, and many more.** More than 200 campus members volunteer to help make this event a success!
