SIEPR 2023-2024 Undergraduate Research Fellows Program - Student Application
The UGRF program aims to offer dynamic research opportunities for Stanford undergraduates during the academic year. The UGRF program continues to focus on enriching the student research experience, and will also offer more opportunities for students to participate in the intellectual life of SIEPR.
Program Structure:
Each quarter students and their faculty mentor will meet prior to the start of the quarter to agree on project goals and learning outcomes for a quarter-long research experience. The student time commitment is expected to be equivalent to a 3-unit course (approximately 9 hours per week). The Winter Quarter program will run from January 8 to March 15, 2024.
- Students may be eligible for a fellowship stipend of $1500 at the start of each academic quarter*
- Students are not held to a weekly work hour requirement.
- Faculty mentors will assess student progress at the at the end of the quarter to make sure students are meeting expectations on their project.
- Students will attend a one-hour weekly working group meeting hosted by SIEPR
- The meetings will offer peer-to-peer interaction, professional development opportunities, and skills training.
- SIEPR will host monthly seminars/presentations for undergraduate students
Eligibility:
UGRFs must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at Stanford. Coterm students who are interested in the program will need to hold undergraduate standing to be eligible for the SIEPR UGRF program.
*In November 2023 we learned about changes to financial aid support for the academic year. The statement from the Stanford Financial Aid Office:
If a student is receiving financial aid and stipend during enrolled periods, the stipend payment(s) will be treated as “additional resources”. A typical aid recipient has $5,000 expected student responsibility (SR) which is not a grant or a scholarship. We will replace the SR first with any other sources of funding such as departmental stipend, outside scholarship, work study, or student’s loan. Once this SR $5,000 is reached (fully met by the other sources of funding), then we will start reducing the institutional scholarship. This change applies to the whole university stipend process. In any cases - if the student is to receive outside scholarships and multiple stipends throughout the academic year, total amount of stipends plus outside scholarships can cause the reduction on the need-based scholarship. This stipend payment may impact the financial aid including need-based scholarship.
We urge students to review their Financial Aid Notification/Award Letter and consult with the Financial Aid Office about how accepting a stipend for this research opportunity might affect their financial aid.
