Defining the Science Advisory Group-

Open Call 2025

Purpose and Objectives

The “Defining the Science” Advisory Group will address such matters as:

•    Identifying current practice gaps relative to current state-of-the art OEHS science so that AIHA and other stakeholders may drive improvements through focused outreach, promotion and training.

•    Identifying key research needed to advance the state of OEHS science to improve the future practice of OEHS.

•    Defining a transparent and open process across VGs, local sections, allied stakeholders etc. for how AIHA might create and sustain a living “research agenda” on behalf of the profession, and how project ideas might be prioritized for future funding.

•    Advise AIHA on where it should focus its internal resources to advance the state of OEHS science given our strengths relative to sister organizations (e.g. ACGIH, BGC, ASSP),

•    Define AIHA’s role as a facilitator for OEHS science research – both for funded research opportunities that come our way and as a “bundler” of partners, needs, and ideas that could be brought to funding organizations.

•    Determining how AIHA might better leverage its volunteer representatives recently appointed to multiple NIOSH National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) Councils. NOTE: NORA is an important source of funding for research and training, and it helps inform NIOSH’s strategic plan, an important source of information to establish and influence practice

Defining the Science Advisory Group Composition

The group is comprised of 8 to 10 members representing a cross-section of OEHS faculty and practitioner members from AIHA and ACGIH. Each member serves a three-year term. Terms are staggered so that as members rotate off, they are replaced with new members. The committee will also have an AIHA Board Liaison appointed by the AIHA President; this individual does not serve as Chair or Vice Chair.

The role of DTS-AG chair alternates between AIHA and ACGIH each year. Therefore, the AIHA President selects a Vice Chair from among those AIHA committee members entering their second year of service when an ACGIH Chair is leading the group. Conversely, the ACGIH Executive Director selects an incoming Vice Chair when the AIHA appointed chair is leading the group. The leader becomes the Chair in his/her third year of service. Terms commence and end at AIHA Connect 2024.

Advisory Group Selection Process

The process of selecting new members begins with an open call for applications to the AIHA and ACGIH membership. Applications are reviewed, and selections made by the DTS-AG. Selections are made to ensure that the committee maintains as broad a diversity of representation as is reasonably possible.

Committee members must be current and active members of AIHA and/or ACGIH and are selected to provide a balanced representation based on, but not limited to, the following criteria:

•    Mix of academics and practitioners

•    Research experience

•    Experience in developing research agendas, overseeing research programs

•    Geographic diversity

•    Gender, ethnic and other diversity considerations

•    Prior volunteer engagement with AIHA or ACGIH

Advisory Group Responsibilities

Members are expected to:

•    Attend periodic conference calls throughout the year.

•    Conduct activities in accordance with relevant AIHA policies, procedures, and priorities

•    Periodically review the AIHA strategic plan to determine whether this group is effectively supporting AIHA’s mission

•    Provide documentation from all stages of implementation of the strategy

General Time Commitment

•    Bi-monthly conference calls (each lasting 1 to 1 ½ hours)

•    Individual work on behalf of the group (2 to 4 hours / month)

•    Email correspondence as needed

Accountability

•    Accountable to the AIHA Board of Directors

•    Agree to uphold and abide by the AIHA Bylaws, Conflict of Interest and Code of Conduct policies

Applications will be accepted until May 1, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. ET.

The DTS-AG will review applications from all interested parties. We hope to have decisions made within 3 weeks of the deadline stated above. On occasion, our review may take longer due to travel, schedules, or unforeseen circumstances. If that is to happen and you have not heard from us with 1 month, please contact Michele Twilley. We will be in touch as soon as we have an update. Thank you for your patience.
