Thank you for your interest in the Adopt-a-Street/Highway Program, jointly sponsored by your Hennepin County Commissioners and the City of Minneapolis, Division of Solid Waste and Recycling. This program was introduced in the Spring of 1997, and has been incorporated into the Clean City Minneapolis initiative. The Adopt-a-Street/Highway Program is a vehicle for local groups, organizations or individuals to adopt a city or county road within Minneapolis. Your application to this Program pledges that you will clean up the area along the road adopted, and maintain it for a minimum of two (2) years. This includes picking up litter, cans and bottles, weed control, reporting and cleaning up graffiti, cleaning off storm grates, and/or any other livability infraction along the adopted route. The adopter will bag the litter for collection and the bags can be collected by Solid Waste and Recycling crews. You assume all liability for volunteers participating in the cleanup events. This is a cooperative effort involving Hennepin County and different divisions of the City’s Public Works Department. Hennepin County provides safety vests. The Division of Solid Waste and Recycling provides yellow trash bags, gloves, trash pickup, disposal and administration. Minneapolis’ Street Division will be notified of the road adoption so that the adopter's name can be printed on signs to be installed along the boulevard, providing recognition in the community. To qualify for a posted adoption sign, the business, organization, or individual must agree to: 1. Adopt both sides of a City street or County road in Minneapolis, for six (6) continuous city blocks. 2. Adopt the road for at least two (2) consecutive years. 3. Clean the adopted road at least four (4) times per year. 4. Hold the City of Minneapolis, Division of Solid Waste and Recycling and the County of Hennepin free and harmless of all liability in connection with this program. The adopter assumes all liability and responsibility for all volunteers participating in scheduled cleanup events. When the application is approved, Solid Waste staff will send a confirmation authorizing the adopter to conduct scheduled cleanups. Questions about this program should be directed to the Clean City Coordinator, City of Minneapolis at 612-673-2789.
