Residential Driveway/Sidewalk - Waivers/Variances/Approvals

Submit residential driveway/sidewalk waiver/variance/approval requests for review by Transportation and Public Works (TPW) staff. This staff includes:

  • Office of City Engineer
  • Transportation Development Services


ALL driveway/sidewalk activity in the right of way MUST be permitted through Right of Way Management. Visit the driveway/sidewalk permit webpage - https://www.austintexas.gov/page/right-way-permits-drivewaysidewalks.

This number may be tied to your driveway/sidewalk permit, building permit, or plan review.

Please provide the address point. If work will occur on a street block different than the address point, please also provide that block information.

Certain types of work require an approval from TPW:

  • TPW must approve stand-alone driveway/sidewalk requests
  • DSD may identify concerns during the course of the Plan Review

City standards dictate the specifics of how driveways, sidewalks, curb & gutter, and walkways should be constructed. To perform work that does not/cannot meet standards, request one or more waivers from the list below.


Projects are encouraged to meet standards if at all possible.
