The purpose of the Salkowski Family Scholarship Fund is to honor Mark Salkowski '78, who contributed to the John Carroll Wrestling program and led the only undefeated Wrestling team in the history of the School. Mark was outgoing, charismatic, hardworking and deeply caring. He was determined and devoted to helping wherever needed and bringing out the best in others. Mark was dedicated to being physically fit and healthy his whole life and encouraged others in this pursuit. He cherished and maintained his relationships with high school friends throughout his life. Mark passed away in 2015 from a glioblastoma brain tumor.
The scholarship also honors Albert and Blanche Salkowski. Albert (1924–2012) was a fierce advocate of education and lifelong learner. He was proud of his 10 children and Polish heritage, and was a John Carroll Board member for many years. Blanche (1926–2009) was always an active volunteer and advocate for education, the disabled and all 10 of her children.
The Salkowski Family seeks to honor and acknowledge their parents and brother by providing funds for a John Carroll student to reap the benefits of an education at the institution that was an integral part of their family. From 1966 until 1988, almost four decades, one of the 10 Salkowski siblings was continuously enrolled at the School and, in 2010, the next generation of Salkowski's graduated. Each benefited and contributed in meaningful ways.
