Elevator: The ADA identifies an elevator as a machine that vertically transports people or freight between levels.
Mobility Features: The ADA identifies the following features to assist with mobility in residential buildings: wide doorways (at least 32 inches), accessible hallways with clear floor space, grab bars in bathrooms, lowered countertops, accessible switches and outlets, accessible sink design, knee space under cabinets, ramps for entryways, roll-in showers, etc.
Visual Impairment Features: The ADA identifies the following features to assist with visual impairment: high-contrast color schemes, tactile signage with raised lettering and Braille, clearly marked entrances and exits, accessible light switches and controls, textured floor surfaces at potential hazards, and audible alerts for appliances, doorbell with visual and audible alerts, etc.
Hearing Impairment Features: The ADA identifies the following features to assist with hearing impairment: visual notification systems like flashing lights for doorbells and alarms, accessible communication systems at entrances, visual indicators for important information, and the option to install assistive listening devices within the unit, etc.
