LFC Career Advancement Center - Internship Funding Application

Students are required to have an internship secured when applying for the funding program. All students completing unpaid or underpaid Academic (for-credit) Internships are eligible to apply (with the exception of internships that are part of an off-campus study program, such as the In The Loop or ACTIVATE programs). Priority will be given to internships taken for credit and domestic internships.

Funding awards are largely based on financial need. Funding is meant to assist with the cost of only one unpaid or underpaid internship that a student would not otherwise be able to pursue, due to financial constraints. Funding is not available to cover expenses such as the cost of the credit, food, or housing expenses.

Funding is limited and not guaranteed. It is strongly recommended that students budget for internship-related expenses and pursue additional funding sources.

Application Deadlines

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. However, funding is limited so we strongly encourage early applications submitted by the recommended deadlines below:

INTERNSHIP EXPENSE REPORT

Each applicant must complete an internship expense report below. This expense report will help the CAC understand the costs associated with completing your internship, above and beyond expenses you incur as a student completing coursework. The selection committee may follow-up with questions or requests for additional information.

Transportation

Fuel calculations are made using the US Department of Energy’s Fuel Economy Calculator: https://www.fueleconomy.gov/trip/

Funding, by default, is calculated for public transportation costs to and from your internship site.

How this is calculated:

  • Transportation funding prioritizes using public transportation. To check if your internship site is accessible by public transportation, use the Google Maps direction tool and click on the train icon to see possible public transportation routes. Funding can offset the cost of a rideshare (ex. Uber) only if the internship site is not accessible by public transportation.

  • For internship sites along the Union Pacific North Metra Line, students are expected to take the Metra to the nearest station to their internship site and take a connecting bus or train between their station and the internship site, using rideshare as a last resort if no bus or train is available.

Funding cannot be calculated without a starting address. If your starting address is your home, please list your home address.

Ex. 2016 Toyota Camry

Will you incur expenses for parking?*

If so, please check first with your site to see whether they reimburse or provide a stipend for parking. You should also inquire where the site suggests that you park.

Note: It is always more economical to purchase a monthly parking pass rather than pay for parking daily.

List the total amount you expect to pay for parking for the duration of your internship.

*Be sure to first ask your site supervisor whether parking will be reimbursed, or for economical parking options in the area.

List your expected parking expenses, including the address or website of the location where you will be parking.

BE DETAILED and share any information about your travel route(s) and/or expenses that can help the Funding Committee calculate your expected transportation costs.

Training or Testing

Note: Drug testing is available through Lake Forest College's Health & Wellness Center via the blood draw service they offer for send out laboratory tests through Labcorp. Students who need drug testing must check with the Health & Wellness Center first to see if they can provide the necessary testing.

List the total amount you expect to pay for training or testing for the duration of your internship.

If applicable, include whether this is a requirement of your employer/organization.

*Please provide links that detail the costs you will incur.

Clothing

We encourage you to visit the Forester Career Closet in the basement of Deerpath Hall as a first step to build up your professional wardrobe. (View hours and policies on the website.)

To supplement the items you can acquire through the Closet, a stipend for professional clothing is calculated based on the number of on-site days per week listed on this application. The committee will reach out to you if additional information is needed.

List the item(s) you will need to purchase and the amount you expect to spend. Please provide links that detail the costs you will incur.

Supplies or Other Costs

List the total amount you expect to pay for any additional supplies or expenses for the duration of your internship. Please explain your calculation below.

*If these are required purchases, please provide links that detail the costs you will incur.

If you have already made any purchases or incurred any costs, please attach your receipt(s). You may also attach any other relevant documents to provide more context to your funding application.
