Research Funds Request

All COMM PhD students are eligible for research funds from the Department of Communication.

Students in their fourth or fifth year are eligible for a one-time research fund request totaling up to $1,000.

Students who teach for COMM in the summer are eligible for research funds totaling up to $1,000 (for every year they teach a summer course). Grad student instructors have until May 20 of the year following their summer session to request the funds. (If you taught in SUM'23, you have until May 20, 2024 to submit your request.)

Common items that students get research funding for:

  • Compensation for research participants
  • Travel to collect data
  • Travel to attend an academic conference or workshop
  • Software (including a year of subscription): Data analysis software (like MAXQDA or STATA) and special data collection software, transcription software (like Prolific, STATA, LIWC)
  • Academic books

The department will not fund computers, external monitors, keyboards, mice, and other tech accessories. If you are unsure whether an item you are requesting funds for is allowable, please send Joanna a draft of your budget justification for clarification.
