General Eligibility for Awards
Members of the AACN and AACN Certification Corporation boards of directors, national office staff, the review panel and employees or members of sponsoring organizations may not provide references, nominate someone or receive awards.
Nominee Eligibility
- Current AACN member
- Nominee may not have received a Circle of Excellence award in the past three years.
- If you are a nominee, you may not nominate another person or provide a reference for another nominee in the same year.
Nominator Eligibility
- Current AACN member
- If you nominate someone, you may not accept a nomination for yourself in the same year.
Requirements for References
- One reference should be from a leader at the nominee’s institution or workplace.
- One reference should be from a colleague with whom the nominee works currently, or has worked with in the recent past either in an employment or volunteer setting.
- Both references must complete the Criteria Evaluation section of the application.
Submission of Materials
The following materials are required for a complete nomination and must be submitted by September 15th.
- A complete Circle Of Excellence Award application.
- Nominee’s current curriculum vitae or resume (required).
- Additional documentation supporting how the nominee demonstrates outcomes associated with the award criteria, not to exceed three pages (optional).
- Reference #1 and Reference #2 must complete their Criteria Evaluation section of the application.

Purpose
The Circle of Excellence awards recognize excellence in facilitating interventions or providing care to specifically address the needs of acutely and critically ill patients and their families. The goal of this award is to highlight exceptional achievements that are congruent with AACN’s mission, vision and values, including a healthy work environment.
Overview Summary
The Circle of Excellence seeks demonstration of exemplary practice by a nurse who achieves significant impact on patient and family care in acute, progressive or critical care nursing. Nominations should describe the contributions and outcomes achieved. Be specific and give concrete examples of the interventions or innovations that demonstrate clear and measurable qualitative and/or quantitative positive impacts at the facility, unit or patient and family level. Potential recipients could be at the facility leadership, management, education or direct bedside care level.
