Neurosciences IDP Qualifying Exam Committee Approval Form
Qualifying exam committees are approved by program co-directors. Students will request approval by submitting this online form by December 15, indicating all committee members, the qualifying exam committee chair, and the pre-quals rigor document reviewer.
The Qualifying Exam Committee is formed to judge the qualifying examination. The committee is selected by the student and is meant to provide mentorship and advocacy for the student. The student may consult with their thesis advisor to choose individuals whom they consider to be best able to assess the student’s preparedness to pursue doctoral research and judge the scientific content of what will ultimately become the student’s thesis work. The Qualifying Exam Committee can subsequently become the Thesis Committee, but this is not required. Note: The thesis advisor/co-advisor is not a member of the qualifying exam committee.
Requirements for Qualifying Exam Committee Membership:
● The committee must have 3 voting members
● The advisor/co-advisor is not a member and does not vote
● The committee will be composed of faculty from more than one department
● At least two members must be Neurosciences Program faculty (with Leadership, Preceptor, or Affiliate status - see program website)
● At least one committee member should be Associate Professor or higher
● Students will select/invite one committee member to serve as the Qualifying Exam Chair (see below)
● Students will select/invite one committee member to review the Rigor Document. This person can also be the Qualifying Exam Chair. (see below)
Non-Academic Council Committee Membership
The Neurosciences IDP co-directors may, in some cases, approve the appointment of a qualifying exam committee member who is not a current or emeritus member of the Academic Council, if that person is particularly well qualified to consult on the proposed dissertation topic or contributes to an area of expertise that is not readily available from faculty. It is expected that committee members will be Stanford faculty. If a member from outside Stanford is desired, additional information about their unique qualifications will be required. This petition is to be submitted by the student to the Neurosciences program to request approval for Qualifying Exam Committee members who are not members of the Stanford Academic Council.
Qualifying Exam Chair
The Qualifying Exam Chair is a member of the Qualifying Exam Committee who oversees the proceedings of the Qualifying Exam, sets the tone and organization of the exam (i.e., order of questioning, timing of questioning, leads the discussion when the student has left the room), and provides ballots for a secret vote. After the exam, the Quals Chair will send a report summarizing the exam and stating the outcome to the student, advisor, quals committee, and program staff.
Pre-Quals Rigor Document Reviewer
The appropriateness of the approach to rigor and reproducibility including quantitative/statistical procedures will be evaluated by a member of the student’s qualifying exam committee prior to the exam. Students will select the reviewer and must get confirmation that they will be able to provide feedback on the document.
