2025 Winter Comp. Coach Specialist Cohort Pilot Application

The Alberta Equestrian Federation, British Columbia Horse Council, Manitoba Horse Council, and Saskatchewan Horse Federation bring a new opportunity to Competition Coach Specialist – English and Western candidates this Winter!


Using a cohort working together in a virtual environment, candidates in a group will work together with an experienced Coach Developer through the training and certification process. The cohort will ensure a more accessible format for candidates who can’t attend an in-person evaluation for various reasons.


Candidates must have a Gmail account as the Cohort is delivered through Google Classroom.


Registrations close on January 5, 2025, at 11:59 PM!


All meetings are delivered through Zoom.


Candidates for the cohort will be selected by the following criteria:


  • Complete applications
  • Readiness Questionnaire answers


Twelve spots for are available.


This cohort will be available only for Competition Coach Specialist candidates of the English (Dressage, Eventing, and Jumping) and Western (General Performance, Reining, and Speed Events) disciplines.

Registration Schedule

Registrations will close on January 5, 2025, at 11:59 pm.


Candidates will be reviewed, selected, and contacted between January 6–10, 2025.


Payment links will be sent out on January 13, 2025.


To secure their spot, candidates must complete payment by January 16, 2025, at 11:59 pm.


Confirmed candidates will gain access to Google Classroom on January 17, 2025.

Once your application is approved, our Sport and Recreation Manager will reach out to provide detailed information on your next steps.


At that time, please be ready to complete your payment using the link provided, ensuring you have your credit card on hand.


  • Competition Coach Specialist Cohort: $1,100 + GST ($1,155 total)


Please note that the Cohort fee gives each candidate the chance to submit one video per outcome. If the standards are not met, candidates will be subject to a $150 fee per outcome that requires resubmission.

  • Full refund less administration fees of $2.50 as well as 3.1% of the total transaction amount;
  • Or option to carry registration forward to future events if the option is available.

Before the Event, but After the Registration Deadline

  • Full refund less 20% of the total transaction amount.
  • Or option to carry registration forward to future events if the option is available.

Additional Requirements - Coaching Experience

You will also need to provide proof of one of the following:


Be at least 20 years of age


Coaching Experience: A minimum of two (2) years of active coaching experience working with multiple athletes at or above the performance level(s) indicated below (the information will appear once the discipline you are applying for is selected).


OR


Competitive and Coaching Experience: Prior experience (2 years or more) competing a horse at the level above they are currently coaching in – documentation of the results will be required and prior experience (1 year or more) coaching an athlete(s) at or above the performance level(s) indicated below (the information will appear once the discipline you are applying for is selected).


OR


Coaching and Certification credentials: A certified NCCP Competition Coach who currently has an athlete(s) at or above the performance level(s) indicated in the table below (not required to be coaching at this level for 2 years).

Dressage (English) - Athlete & Horse requirements

Please note that candidates must have at least ONE athlete and horse actively competing at the level outlined below, as you will be evaluated based on your coaching of that athlete during a competition.


  • Athletes competing at Second Level or higher, with at least one (1) minimum score of 65% at an EC Gold-sanctioned competition.

Eventing (English) - Athlete & Horse requirements

Please note that candidates must have at least ONE athlete and horse actively competing at the level outlined below, as you will be evaluated based on your coaching of that athlete during a competition.


  • Athletes meeting Minimum Eligibility Requirements (MER) at the national EV 100 Level or above.

Jumping (English) - Athlete & Horse requirements

Please note that candidates must have at least ONE athlete and horse actively competing at the level outlined below, as you will be evaluated based on your coaching of that athlete during a competition.


  • Athletes who are successfully completing clear courses jumping 1 m divisions at EC Silver or Gold sanctioned competitions or above.
  • Hunter and equitation classes may be considered for athletes competing in the following recognized classes/divisions (or above): Pre-Green Hunter (EC Rules G303), Children’s Hunter (EC Rules G307), Adult Amateur Hunter (EC Rules G309), CET Mini-Medal (or provincial medal classes of similar level).

General Performance (Western) - Athlete & Horse requirements

Please note that candidates must have at least ONE athlete and horse actively competing at the level outlined below, as you will be evaluated based on your coaching of that athlete during a competition.


  • Athletes who are successfully competing at breed-sanctioned or provincially sanctioned competitions. Athlete(s) competing and achieving top-5 placings in a class of six (6) or more competitors under at least two (2) different judges at a minimum of three (3) breed or provincially sanctioned competitions.
  • These results must be repeated in at least three (3) of the following: Western Pleasure, Showmanship, Horsemanship, Trail, Western Riding.
  • Show records verifying placings must be submitted.

Reining (Western) - Athlete & Horse requirements

Please note that candidates must have at least ONE athlete and horse actively competing at the level outlined below, as you will be evaluated based on your coaching of that athlete during a competition.


  • Athletes competing at National Reining Horse Association (NRHA), Canadian Reining Classic (CRC) or breed shows and who have achieved minimum scores of 68 under at least two (2) different judges on three (3) or more runs.
  • Show records verifying scores must be submitted.

Speed Events (Western) - Athlete & Horse requirements

Please note that candidates must have at least ONE athlete and horse actively competing at the level outlined below, as you will be evaluated based on your coaching of that athlete during a competition.


Athletes successfully competing at provincial or national speed events, breed shows, or rodeos, and who have achieved the following:

  • Barrel Racing: A top-10 placing in any division at provincial or national speed event shows, or a top-6 placing at rodeos or breed shows, on three (3) or more runs.
  • Pole Bending: A time of 26 seconds or under at provincial, national speed events or breed shows or rodeos on three (3) or more runs.
  • Show records verifying the sets of either placings or times will need to be submitted.
