SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER (SSN) LETTER REQUEST FORM

What is SSN?

A Social Security Number (SSN) is a taxpayer identification number issued by the Social Security Administration. If you are paid in the US, you must have an SSN to file a US income tax return.


You are not eligible to apply for SSN if you do not have a job in the U.S.


Who is eligible for SSN?

  • Students who are enrolled and registered for classes at Skyline College; AND
  • Students who are employed or have a job offer


SSN Application Steps

1) Call to make an appointment with the SSN office. Search for the nearest Social Security office to your home: https://secure.ssa.gov/ICON/main.jsp


2 ) Submit the SSN Letter Request Form (this form) online with a copy of your job offer letter. You will be asked to pick up your letter from the ISP office within 5 business days.


3) Complete and collect the following documents:

  • Social Security Application Form SS-5: https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ss-5.pdf
  • Passport
  • I-20
  • Most recent I-94: https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/#/home
  • Job offer letter
  • ISP support letter


4) Submit Form SS-5 and the supporting documents in person at the Social Security Administration's office. Request a verification receipt of your application.


5) Wait approximately two weeks for the Social Security card to arrive in the mail.

  • SSN is not a permission to work
  • International students may work up to 20 hours/week on campus
  • International students are not allowed to work off campus without the OPT or CPT authorization.
