Unified Police Department Citizen’s Academy Sign-Up
Next Session: FALL 2019
Day of Week: THURSDAYS
Dates: AUGUST 29 to NOVEMBER 14, 2019
Duration: 11 WEEKS
Time: 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM EACH NIGHT
Location: Unified Police Headquarters, 3365 S 900 W South Salt Lake
(location may vary based on the event scheduled for that night)
The UPD Citizen’s Academy provides a great opportunity to citizens to interact with members of the Unified Police Department and Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office. Participants will learn about what our professionals do on a daily basis and gain a better understanding of the demands of police work. It also provides an opportunity for these same members to learn from citizens about their experiences. The UPD CPA is about sharing and learning from each other.
The program consists of a variety of classes, some lecture based but most being interactive. Interactive elements include a tour of the Salt Lake County Jail, demonstrations by K9 handlers, the UPD S.W.A.T. team, Crime Lab, V.E.C.C. Dispatch, and more.
The academy will have scenario nights where participants will learn, through practical hands-on experience, about building searching & clearing, domestic violence response, arrest techniques, action vs reaction, high-risk traffic stops, and more.
The academy is free of charge. You will receive an academy polo shirt and at the successful completion of the academy, you will receive a certificate of completion. Meals and/or snacks are provided weekly, with exception of the first night.
Because of the demand, and time and effort that goes into putting the academy together (most of which comes from unpaid volunteers), we ask that those interested only sign up if they can commit to participating in the full 11-week program.
Those who miss more than 2 weeks will be asked to return to a session that they can fully commit to.
The academy is limited to 40 people. Anyone who lives or works in Salt Lake County is encouraged to sign-up. Preference is given to individuals who reside in cities or townships serviced by Unified Police. However, residence of other cities within Salt Lake County are welcome to sign-up and attend.
Participation is limited to individuals over the age of 18. All participants must pass a criminal background check and complete a general liability waiver.
