M.Eng Petition Form

Once completed, your petition will automatically be sent to all relevant parties. You will receive notice when:

  1. Your advisor approves/denies it (with explanation)
  2. The Program Director approves/denies it (with explanation)
  3. The Graduate Field Administrator has updated their records to reflect your petition.

For most petitions, this is all you will need to do! For extension requests, there may be a delay between approval of the petition and your graduation date in StudentCenter changing. There are additional steps required for international students.

*Do not submit this petition unless you have already discussed this possibility with Professor Averbukh and received her approval. It will automatically be denied if you have not received her approval.

Note: if you are an International Student, once this petition has been approved, you will also need to complete the F-1 Extension Request form with the International Student Services Office. Indicate that you are a professional degree student, and that you need the extension to be able to take ORIE 9110, which requires an internship.

An internship alone is not sufficient reasoning for an extension. Either indicate that you were not able to satisfy your concentration requirements and will need one more semester, or that you intend to take ORIE 9110 in the coming semester, which will necessitate you getting internship experience. Or both!

Be thorough: "This course has machine learning" is not reason in itself to take a class, explain why it's more appropriate for your goals than CS 5780 and/or why it's relevant to your concentration's specific requirements.

List the classes you believe enable you to waive the particular area, as well as the semester you completed them and the grade you received.

Per the handbook: the requirements for eligibility to waive an ORIE Core area are six or more letter-graded credits of coursework within a particular area, three or more of which must be ORIE classes. If your undergraduate degree is not in Engineering, exceptions may be made to this specific requirement, as the courses available to you will differ.

Explain why you want this change and the steps you will take to ensure that you are able to meet the requirements for your new concentration.

List the component you wish to waive and explain why. Include in your reasoning why you were unable to complete this component by traditional means.

Include any relevant files - for course-related petitions, this may be the syllabus for the unlisted course. For concentration changes/extensions, this may be a new Study Plan.
