Request for BSL-3/ABSL-3 Training to Work Independently in Duke Biocontainment Facilities
In collaboration with Duke OESO and DLAR, the Duke Human Vaccine Institute Safety Team provides training for highly motivated and qualified individuals to work independently in one or both of the Duke biocontainment facilities. The Duke Regional Biocontainment Laboratory (aka Global Health Research Building -GHRB) in on the main medical center campus and has BSL3 labs and an ABSL3 vivarium for small animal work. We are excited to announce that in the future we will be adding additional BSL3 lab capacity in Building 3 on the Duke@RTP satellite campus. This service is funded by the Duke School of Medicine. Training approach, policies and process are detailed in GHRB SOP#004. Typical training will take 3-5 months and is a rigorous process that requires the trainee to commit 10-20 hours per week to working with an assigned mentor in the containment facilities to master policies and procedures for safe work practices. Training for all levels of workers will start with a 1 week full-time didactic and hands on "Boot Camp." These are run monthly and if approved to proceed with training you will be contacted to schedule this class. Our safety training and mentoring WILL include training in all required safety policies and procedures, and agent-specific protocols for safely inactivating materials for removal to lower containment (e.g. BSL2, BSL1). The training WILL NOT teach specific laboratory assays or procedures, such as growing and titering pathogen stocks. It is an expectation that the trainee be fully capable of performing all the lab assays and animal procedures they need to support their research prior to transitioning to work with agents requiring BSL3 (e.g SARS-Cov-2, M. tb).
