Strengthen and Modernize U-I Partnerships

A UIDP Initiative

UIDP has launched an initiative to identify bold new approaches to modernize university-industry partnerships (and, by extension, partnerships involving government agencies and nonprofit funders). This is an opportunity for change that would address the evolving demands of the global economy. From streamlining collaboration processes by reducing bureaucratic barriers and finding new, impactful ways to collaborate, UIDP has an opportunity to re-frame how partnerships can be built and strengthened, thereby increasing the impact of these collaborations.


We seek insight from the global partnering community on challenges and opportunities to evolve and improve collaboration. Please contribute your fresh ideas and offer feedback about the challenges listed below.

UIDP invites you to respond to the following challenges to U-I collaborations. We welcome your feedback, reflections, and proposed solutions.

Students are not trained for careers in industry.

There are overwhelming inefficiencies in IP management and the transfer to potential users.

There are global challenges that cannot be solved by any single company or country.

National security/research security regulations create administrative burdens for research institutions.

Academic research culture does not incentivize awareness of downstream research use/application.

Academic researchers interested in conducting applied research for industry sponsors may have a conflicting interest in creating a startup.

Academic promotion and tenure processes do not incentivize tenure track faculty to work closely with industry and conduct use-inspired research.

There are no standard pathways for multiple funders to pool resources to fund research.
