Medical Assistant Apprentice Application

Please note, beginning in Spring 2024 we are a Medical Assistant Apprenticeship only. We no longer certify or place Patient Care Technicians.

We are on hold for our next cohort and will reach out once we have a date.

Thank you for interest in the Ascension Medical Assistant (MA) Apprenticeship program. This is an 18 month program offered at Ascension Texas Austin that certifies apprentices with a MA certification upon graduation.

Join the MA Apprenticeship program with Ascension and start a new career in healthcare! As an apprentice you will:

  • Earn and learn: This program consists of in-person class and simulation time as well as self paced online learning. All apprentices are full time Ascension employees with benefits once accepted into the program and will have a Medical Assistant position with Ascension upon successful program completion ( 2 year service commitment required). Apprentices will be paid as a full time Associate (36-40 hours/week) throughout the length of the program (18 months which includes a 4 month internship and 14 month externship). Paid time includes virtual learning, time spent in the classroom, skills lab and clinic rotations.

  • Certification: The program will prepare apprentices to take the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) exam to achieve their credential through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).

  • Hands on-training: Apprentices will complete classroom instruction, online learning, hands on training including skills lab time and on-the-job training through various clinical rotations.

Job placement:

Following successful completion of the internship, the Associate will transition from an apprentice role to an open Certified MA role within the Ascension Medical Group network. The apprentice will have the opportunity to select two (2) open positions they are interested in pursuing and have the ability to perform 1 week working interviews to determine if it's a good fit for both the apprentice and manager for completion of the 14 month externship and permanent job placement.

Learners will be expected to:

  • Complete weekly online learning
  • Participate in weekly in person class time and hands-on skills training
  • Pass written exams
  • Travel to various clinical sites in the Austin Metro area
  • Commit to a 98% attendance rate; this allows Apprentices to miss a maximum of 2 days across the first 6 month period
