We are pleased that you are interested in Teaching First-Generation Students by Drawing on Cultural Strengths, a professional learning opportunity offered by the CSU Innovative Teaching and Learning Programs.

This institute, developed and facilitated by Dr. Rebecca Gutierrez Keeton and Dr. Maritza Lozano, faculty in the Department of Education Leadership in the College of Education at CSU Fullerton, focuses on evidence-based strategies for teaching and interacting that draw on the strengths of first-generation college students (FGCS).

The institute is open to faculty of any rank or appointment type who have previously taught at least one course in the CSU and who will be teaching in Fall 2025.

Participation entails a commitment that begins in Summer 2025 and then continues in Fall 2025 as follows:

• enrolling and participating in the summer institute, from June 3 to July 1, 2025.

• attending three, two-hour synchronous meetings in Weeks 1, 3, and 5:

    -    Tuesday, June 3, 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.

    -    Tuesday, June 17, 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.

    -    Tuesday, July 1, 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.

• completing activities asynchronously in Weeks 2 and 4

• implementing new engagement strategies, a revised syllabus, and a new assessment or assignment(s) in one campus-based course in Fall 2025

• In Fall 2025, completion of the institute requires participating in one or more virtual seminar meetings and completing activities, including reflection assignments.
