About the Upstate New York Energy Storage Engine:
The Upstate New York Energy Storage Engine, led by Binghamton University, is a U.S. National Science Foundation-funded, place-based innovation program. The coalition of more than 40 academic, industry, nonprofit, state and community organizations includes Binghamton University, Cornell University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Syracuse University, LAUNCH-NY and NY-BEST as core partners. The Engine advances next-gen battery technology development and manufacturing to drive economic growth and bolster national security. Its vision is to transform upstate New York into America’s Battery Capitol. For more information on the Upstate New York Energy Storage Engine, visit https://upstatenyengine.org/.
About the Opportunity:
The U.S. National Science Foundation-funded Upstate New York Energy Storage Engine is pleased to announce its first Energy Storage Scholars program for summer 2025—a ten week undergraduate summer research experience from May 27th through August 1st. We invite applications from undergraduate students interested in engaging in research in the field of battery science and technology. Research will occur at Binghamton University, Cornell University, Rochester Institute of Technology, and Syracuse University.
Batteries are the building blocks of modern technology. Battery technologies, in particular lithium-ion batteries (LiBs), are the dominant form of energy storage used today in consumer electronics, transportation systems, medical devices, electric grids, defense systems, and AI data centers; however, critical research and technology challenges remain to be addressed across the battery life cycle spanning materials, cell manufacturing, applications, and sustainable end-of-life processing including recycling and reuse.
The Upstate New York Energy Storage Scholars Program provides undergraduate students the unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience, develop critical research skills, and contribute to advancing the field of energy storage. Students will work in research facilities under the mentorship of leading faculty and graduate students.
Priority application deadline is March 1, 2025. All applications submitted after will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
