2024 United States Senate Youth Program (State) Department of Education Student Application Form

Please complete each section of this application and remember to attach the following items:


1. A resume including any received awards, recognition and leadership activities in student government/politics, community, music, sports and other extracurricular activities.


2. A cover letter describing how you further equity in your community through your leadership position(s), why you should be selected for the U.S. Senate Youth Program, and what you hope to gain from the U.S. Senate Youth Program.


3. An essay of 600-1000 words responding to one of the essay topics provided on the ODE website: https://www.oregon.gov/ode/students-and-family/pages/united-states-senate-youth-program.aspx


Please format the essay with 12-point font, 1-inch margins and double spacing. A works cited page can be included and will not count as part of the word count.


4. A letter of recommendation specific to this program, not to exceed one page in length.


5. A statement of the specific process used to determine the school’s nominee, as publicized within the school. This statement must be written on official school stationery.


6. Please upload a 3-minute video responding to the prompt from the Application and Process Requirements. NOTE: File size for the video is 250 MB.

Leadership Information

Please note: Positions that DO NOT qualify the student for the program include:

  • Attendance or officer position at Boys/Girls Nation or State summer conference
  • General Member of a National Honor Society (serving as an elected officer is acceptable)
  • A founder or chairperson of a self-created group
  • A participant, captain or officer in Mock Trial, Debate Team, Model UN or other academic club, mock legislature, conference or competition where the primary engagement is for individual educational benefit.
