Inclusion happens when a child with disabilities is identified or enrolled in a program. However, inclusion involves more than simply bringing children together; it’s about supporting all children to learn and connect with others. How do you help children with disabilities thrive in early care and education settings? Participants will reflect on the defining features of inclusion and get examples of inclusive practices. They will explore Universal Design and Universal Design for Learning in early childhood settings and gain practical strategies that they can use to include children with disabilities in their care.

The word “health” refers to a state of emotional and physical well-being. Children with and without disabilities may experience health issues. We will explore the range of medical and environmental issues that can impact children’s health, and how these issues may contribute to behaviors that are challenging. Participants will leave this workshop with a better understanding of these health issues and have more tools to support the children and families affected by them.

As an educator, you may be the first person to notice that a child is learning differently or having difficulty. Do you have the skills to share your concerns about a child’s development or behavior sensitively with families? What can you do when the family members see things differently? This workshop provides insight into the emotional impact the initial identification of developmental concerns often has on families and providers along with concrete, practical tools, and strategies you can use right away.
