Individual Diversity Development Plan

In the School of Engineering, we work hard to achieve our diversity, equity, and inclusion goals because they are essential to our teaching and research mission. We strive to attract the most talented people from all segments of society (diversity) and then ensure that everyone feels welcomed and supported in their work (inclusion) and has fair and equitable access to the resources and opportunities to succeed (equity). All of these elements are critical to our personal and collective success. We cannot create innovative, impactful solutions to the many complex societal issues we face when we cannot embrace and support the wide range of perspectives and voices in our community.

You play a key role in this work. Whether your day-to-day work focuses on issues of diversity, or seems unrelated to topics such as equity and bias, achieving a truly inclusive community at Princeton depends on each of us.

The Diversity Champions program supports your professional and personal growth in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The program aims to help you move our community forward, whether you have a specific goal in mind, or aren't sure where to begin. The following process will help you identify and articulate DEI goals and create a plan to meet those goals.

As you answer the questions below, it may be helpful to draw on this substantial list of trainings and resources and these sample goals.

Because this is a professional development opportunity, we encourage you to inform your immediate supervisor of your plans to enroll in the program.

Development Goals and Motivations

In this section, please identify one or more achievable DEI development goals. The motivation behind your goal could be professional or personal. Have you encountered situations where you wished you had a greater understanding of a particular DEI topic or greater proficiency in addressing a DEI-related situation?

Maybe you experienced thoughts such as:

•    “I wish I knew more about this…” or

•    “I wish I knew how to talk about this…” or

•    “I wish I knew how I should/could respond to such a situation…”

At other times, your motivation and goal might be related to observations you have made about inequities and their impact on the community.

What do I wish I knew more about or understood better? What do I wish I could do better?

Plan for Meeting DEI Goal(s)

What additional skills or knowledge would you need to achieve your goal? How might you obtain those skills and knowledge? For example, if the skill/knowledge is “to better understand my implicit biases,” the action plan might be to take the Implicit Attitudes Test and learn more about the biases that it identifies. You may find it helpful to refer to DEI Resources List on the Diversity Champions webpage in creating your action plans.

What skills or knowledge do I need to acquire/ enhance?

What are some steps I can take over the next 6 -12 months to develop the skills?
