GEO Faculty Led Programs - Proposal Form

Overview: All UO faculty are invited to propose a faculty-led study abroad program by completing this form*. Applications for all programs, including those that have run in previous years, must be submitted each year for review and renewal. Proposals will be reviewed and final selections will be made by GEO in partnership with academic leadership in departments, schools, and colleges. All programs must operate in accordance with the policies of the University Senate Study Abroad Programs Committee (SAPC) and consistent with the parameters in the GEO Faculty Leader Handbook.

*This process does not apply to pre-freshman programs.

Application Instructions:

  1. Complete this Online Form
  2. Upload Supporting Documents to the bottom of this Online Form: - CVs for all faculty leaders; - Syllabi for all proposed courses; - Optional: other relevant information (e.g. itineraries, etc.)

Deadlines:

  • April 15 (for programs running in summer or fall of the following year)
  • November 1 (for programs running in winter or spring of the following academic year)

Approval Process: GEO will work with leadership in your department and school/college to make selections, approve programs, and issue notifications by late-May/late-November.

An automated email with the details of your proposal will be sent immediately following your submission to the department head listed in your proposal.

Once a program is approved, a GEO Program Coordinator will be assigned to work with the faculty leader on the details of program development.

Preference will be given to:

  1. programs with a viable faculty rotation plan over multiple cycles
  2. programs that engage UO strategic academic priorities
  3. programs that help diversify study abroad offerings (program location, subject areas, cost)

Faculty Leader Information

List the name of the faculty who will lead the program as well as faculty who are willing to run this program, in a rotation, in subsequent cycles. Preference will be given to programs with a viable faculty rotation plan over multiple cycles. **If the faculty leader is unable to provide all instruction on the program, GEO will work with academic leadership in the relevant school/college/dept. to identify qualified local faculty. GEO's policy is to default to hiring local instructors as opposed to sending multiple UO faculty, as this helps keep program costs low while strengthening the cross-cultural component of a study abroad program. Exceptions may be made on a case by case basis with approval from school/college/dept. academic leadership.

Programs that have strong departmental support and include a faculty rotation plan are preferred.

Proposed Curriculum Taught by UO Faculty

Faculty leaders typically teach one or two courses, with the possibility of other courses to be taught by local faculty/instructors (must be approved by home unit Dean and GEO). At the bottom of this proposal, please attach the complete syllabus.

NOTE: offering a course with at least 90 contact hours (e.g. two courses of 45 contact hours each) allows students from GEO partner institutions on a semester calendar to access summer financial aid, which would potentially increase enrollments for your program and help you reach your minimum enrollment number.

For applicants applying to renew an existing program, check the box below to keep existing courses unchanged.

NOTE: Faculty will be asked to submit syllabi for all programs taught by UO faculty at the end of this application form.

Student Selection and Recruitment

Minimum enrollment is set by GEO through an analysis of program costs and program price by August 1 (summer and fall programs) or April 1 (winter or spring programs) the year prior to the program start date. Successful faculty led programs depend upon faculty engagement and school/college/dept support with the recruitment process.
