Physician Well-being Director Course

2024 Application

Course Description

Framed by the Stanford Model of Professional Fulfillment, this virtual six-week educational series equips leaders with knowledge and tools to advance clinician well-being at the local level in departments, divisions, practices, sites, and groups. The course is designed as a synchronous, live learning experience on Zoom, with assignments and activities to complete between sessions in a secure learning management system.

The course contains the following components:

  • Didactic presentations and panels featuring Stanford Medicine leadership and faculty who present insights from the latest research in the physician well-being, teach the Stanford Model and other key concepts, and provide context and inspiration regarding how Stanford applies this work in our own hospitals, school of medicine, and health system.
  • Peer-to-peer learning in small group exercises designed to facilitate networking and camaraderie, to provide a focused environment to discuss course content, and to create a space for participants to practice and get feedback on ideas that could be implemented in their home organizations.
  • Individual participant work including prework, assignments, emails, references, and resources for critical thinking and application of learnings in home organizations.

Target Audience

Department/unit physician well-being leaders, chiefs, chairs, medical directors, wellness committee leaders, quality improvement leaders, program improvement leaders, residency program directors, practice/clinic leaders and others who are positioned to influence physician well-being at the local level in their organizations.

Important Notes About How We Consider Applications

This is an application-based course. Learners apply and are vetted for participation based on their current role and scope. We primarily accept physician leaders who already have a mandate to influence physician well-being at the local (e.g., departmental/division) level. Applicants who aspire to have such a role, or who are in different well-being roles, are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Senior well-being healthcare leaders with organization-wide responsibilities (e.g. Chief Wellness Officers and other c-suite executives) are encouraged to apply instead for our Chief Wellness Officer Course (CWOC), which is a week-long, immersive, in-person course designed to help leaders spearhead organization-wide strategy for physician well-being. Information on the CWOC can be found on the Chief Wellness Officer Course website.
