A select group of 60 volunteers staff the checkpoints from Yentna to Nome. If you excel in challenging winter outdoor conditions, possess patience and adaptability, and can cope without running water, one of these positions might be right for you.

We also maintain checkpoints in our Hub locations of McGrath and Unalakleet, larger villages with additional amenities such as indoor plumbing and dedicated camp chefs. While Checkpoint cooks may be servicing 15-20 volunteers, Hub cooks need to be ready to provide breakfast, lunch and dinner for up to 75 people at a time.

While returning checkpoint volunteers are given priority, we are always looking for hard-working volunteers to join the checkpoint teams.

The IAF Support Team coordinates travel for Iditarod trail volunteers and supports our Iditarod Air Force of 25 pilots in multiple hub locations. The team creates itineraries, organizes travelers, loads supplies on planes, fuels aircraft, dispatches IAF flights, manifests sponsored charters, and secures seats on commercial flights.

Safety, efficiency, and a flexible attitude are essential qualities for all team members. While the majority of positions are filled by returning volunteers, those with experience in aviation or a strong interest in working with the IAF are encouraged to apply to one or more of these positions.

Dedicated to dog care, the Iditarod uses licensed veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and Iditarod- certified dog handlers.

Veterinarians are involved in pre-race dog examinations and are stationed at each race checkpoint to evaluate care for dogs running the race and care for those dogs that may be discontinuing from the race (“Return Dog”). Veterinarian positions are by invitation-only. If you are a licensed veterinarian and would like to volunteer, please contact Karen.mcnaught@iditarod.com for more information on how to apply for the Veterinary Team.

Veterinary Technicians are involved in pre-race veterinary testing for all canine competitors as well as assisting veterinarians with return dogs at a few dedicated locations along the trail.

Dog handlers are used in a few specific locations to assist the medical team in caring for and transporting the return dogs from the trail back to Anchorage. As Anchorage is Headquarters for Return Dog, there are office positions needed within Return Dog at this location.

While most veterinary technician and return dog handler/office crew positions are filled by returning volunteers, new volunteers with the requisite licenses or expertise who are interested in these positions are encouraged to apply.
