Language other than English (LOTE) Evaluation Request Form


GENERAL INFORMATION:



  • Area 6: Language other than English (LOTE) is only required if you are following the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) for University of California (UC), or IGETC-UC.

ADVISORY:



  • LOTE must be evaluated prior to submitting an official IGETC-UC Certification request.


  • Do not submit a LOTE Evaluation Request if you have U.S. college/university coursework, Advanced Placement (AP) Exam scores, or International Baccalaureate (IB) Exam scores that are eligible to satisfy Area 6: Language other than English (LOTE). Submit a Transcript Evaluation Request or an AP/IB Transcript Evaluation Request instead.



PROCESS:


  • Requests may take up to 14 business days, excluding weekends and holidays, to be processed.


  • Requests are processed in the order in which they are received.

U.S. High School AND U.S. Middle School Transcript Requirements



U.S. High School Courses:


  • High school language of instruction must be taught in English.


  • *Foreign language course must be at least second level.


  • Letter grade of a C-, or better, in the second semester.





*U.S. High School Foreign Courses completed in U.S. Middle School:


  • Language of instruction must be English.


  • Courses must have been completed in 7th and/or 8th grade.


  • Foreign language course(s) must be high school level and indicated on transcript as such.


  • Letter grade a C-, or better.



A copy of your official or unofficial high school transcript is required.


International High School Transcript Requirements



Course Detail:


  • Courses cannot be English as the foreign language.


  • Language course must be second level, second semester, or higher.


  • Grade must be equivalent to C-, or higher, or "passing."



Transcript:


  • Transcript must be translated by an official third-party agency if informational details are not in English.


  • Transcript must include grading scale.


  • Course term and/or year must be indicated.



A copy of the official transcript is required!

S.A.T. Subject Tests Requirements



The following languages with a minimum score are acceptable:



(If taken before May 1995 use 1st score as minimum or if taken after May 1995 use 2nd score as minimum.)


  • Chinese with listening -- 500 or 520


  • French/French with listening -- 500 or 540


  • German/German with listening -- 500 or 510


  • Hebrew (Modern) -- 500 or 470


  • Italian -- 500 or 520


  • Japanese with listening -- 500 or 510


  • Korean/Korean with listening -- N/A or 500 (Prior to May 1995 not accepted.)




A copy of the official S.A.T. transcript is required!

General Certificate of Education (GCE) or (IGCSE) Exam Requirements


Any of the following exams in any language, other than English, with an eligible letter grade are accepted:



  • International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) "O" Level Exam --- "A," "B," or "C."


  • General Certificate of Education (GCE) "O" Level Exam --- "A," "B," or "C."


  • General Certificate of Education (GCE) "A" Level Exam --- "A," "B," or "C."



A copy of official exam results transcript is required!

Official Achievement Test or Proficiency Letter Requirements



Official Achievement Test:


  • Test must be administered by a college or university.


  • Language cannot be English


  • Proficiency must be equivalent to that of two (2) years of high school foreign language


  • Results may be posted on official transcript indicating course title, units, and grade OR on an official institution's letterhead stating mastered proficiency in said language equivalent to two (2) years of high school foreign language.



Proficiency Letter:


  • Must be administered by a faculty member associated with a United States regionally accredited institution of higher education.


  • Faculty member must be able to verify a student's competency in foreign language.


  • Proficiency results must be posted on the institution's official letterhead stating student's mastered proficiency in said language that is equivalent to two (2) years of high school foreign language.



A copy of the original Achievement Test or Proficiency Letter is required!




Submitting a request without attaching the required document(s) will be denied.
