In-Street Structured Patio Permit 2023

New or Changed Patio or Location

Any food and beverage business wishing to install a solid structured patio (i.e., a solid platform with enclosure) on Town of Canmore property is required to obtain an In-Street Structured Patio (ISP) permit. Applications are accepted year-round; permits will only be granted for the year of application. This process is managed by Economic Development.


If applying for a patio within the Main Street Pedestrian Area, and to ensure that a permit is processed in time for the Main Street Closure, ISP permit applications with all required documentation must be submitted by Apr. 17. Applications will be accepted after Apr. 17, but it is not guaranteed to be processed in time for the closure start-date. This neither includes processing times for any outstanding additional permits (e.g. Building Permit), nor does it include processing times for payments.


Payment will be required prior to the review of any application.

Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Select all that apply. Sandbags and weights are permitted by Building Code. Spiking, drilling or otherwise affixing structures into Town infrastructure is prohibited.

 

If yes, it is the business owner's responsibility to obtain a valid AGLC liquor license for the extension to their business premises.

All documents pertaining to your setup must be uploaded at the time of application submission. Incomplete applications will be declined, and applicant will need to resubmit.

  • Adjacent building façade
  • Property line
  • Any existing use of the space
  • Proposed patio
  • Any sidewalks re-routing
  • Landscaping details
 

Must include:

  • Elevations and cross-sections of the patio structure(s)
  • Specifications on how railings or structure(s) will be mounted, supported, or weighted
 

A minimum of five million in liability coverage is required. Required to be valid for duration of patio setup.

 

Required only if business owner leases property. Copies of email correspondences are accepted.

 

Ground-floor street-facing business require letters of support from adjacent businesses.


Second floor or non-street facing businesses require a letter of support from owner(s) of ground-floor street-facing business in front of which the patio will be located, and the adjacent businesses.


Copies of email communications are accepted.

 

An occupancy load certificate is required prior to opening any new delineated patios or seating areas, or if there have been changes previously permitted patio or seating area. To book an inspection, contact the Fire Department at 403.678.6199 or fire@canmore.ca and submit a copy of the communication from Fire with your MSPA permit application.

 

Your application will be submitted to Street & Roads upon review and conditional acceptance of your MSPA permit.
