Western T2 Diabetes Workforce Scholarship
Expression of Interest | Care partnership Diabetes Scholarship funding.
The Western Type 2 (T2) Diabetes Scholarship is designed to support health practitioners with enhanced skills to provide care for people living in Western and Far West NSW. The scholarship initiative is one component of the Care Partnership – Diabetes (CP-D) program that is designed to improve health outcomes for people living with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in these regions by: supporting the needs of the T2DM health workforce and improving the quality of health services including earlier detection and management and improved health system integration.
CP-D is supported by a partnership between Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD), the Far West Local Health District (FWLHD), Western NSW Primary Health Network (WNSW PHN) and NSW Rural Doctors Network (RDN). The Western T2 Diabetes Scholarship is jointly funded by the NSW Ministry of Health’s Collaborative Commissioning program and the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care’s Health Workforce Scholarship Program that is administered by RDN in NSW.
The ongoing EOI registration form is now open for Health practitioners interested in upskilling in Diabetes management.
The register is designed to assist Health practitioners to be notified of scholarship grants as they become available.
What scholarship support is offered?
Scholarships: A payment up to $10,000 per year, for up to two years, toward the cost of completing a postgraduate course leading to a postgraduate qualification
Bursaries: A payment up to $10,000 (maximum of $10,000 in total in one year) for professional development and upskilling course fees and a contribution to associated accommodation and travel-related expenses.
Study leave: Funding support may be provided to employers to cover the cost of backfilling to release an applicant for study leave to undertake courses that address priority skill needs. This will be capped at 10 working days per annum and ideally match employers’ existing study leave agreement
Eligible EOI applicants include:
- Doctors, nurses, allied health practitioners, dentists and Aboriginal health practitioners and workers wanting to further their professional skills in type 2 diabetic workforce.
- Applicants pursing skills that will enhance the care they provide to people living with type 2 diabetes.
- Applicants currently working in a Western NSW location.
- Evidence of support from employer to undertake this upskilling

Once funding is available, a workforce engagement officer will make contact with the application process to apply.
Case management throughout the application process may include:
- The case manager making regular phone/email contact with the applicant to track study, progress and determine how new skills are being utilised.
- Support and access to RDN resources that may be relevant to the applicant’s needs.
- Monitoring the progress of postgraduate studies and/or training programs at key
- milestones.
- Provision of program information and updates to the applicant
