RMIT School of Science - Data Analytics student projects

To provide an authentic work-integrated learning (WIL) experience, industry partners are invited to submit challenges for a project topic. The projects must offer realistic, challenging, yet achievable for teams of final year undergraduate and postgraduate students, and must add real value to existing, anticipated or simulated problems in the industry.

The students in this course work approximately 10 hrs/week (flexibly in addition to other courses) on the project for 10 - 12 weeks.

Semester start dates:

Semester 1, 2025 - 3 March 2025

Semester 2, 2025 - 21 July 2025

Students in the Analytics program have conducted projects in the following (not limited) areas:

(a)data wrangling and data visualisation

(b) statistics modelling, e.g., time series analysis, forecast, classification, multivariate analyses, genomics analysis, quality control and experimental design

(c) predictive modelling (random forest tree, neural network, support vector machine etc), natural language processing, image processing. Students have considerable programming skills in R, Python, structured query language (SQL) and SAS.

WIL Agreement

All organisations hosting RMIT students on a work placement must sign a Work Integrated Learning Relationship Agreement. The WIL relationship agreement is a legal arrangement with clauses such as confidentiality, insurance coverage and intellectual property. Copies of the WIL agreement are available to read prior to entering into the agreement.

Are there any inherent technical skills, abilities or requirements for students to participate in this project? eg. Programming, tools, data wrangling, data visualisation, statistical modelling, machine learning skills such as predictive modelling or natural language processing etc?

- Any resources available to the student - Are there any confidential Data or information? - Do you have other requirements such as a police check, WWCC?

Would you be happy for multiple teams to work on your project?

Note: Generally, a team of 3-5 students is preferred for better project outcomes.

What is your preferred working format?*

Onsite (Working/visit to a premise required)

Online (Working entirely remote)

Hybrid (Working online and some site visits required, including data collection requirements)

Please select Onsite/Hybrid if there is any requirement for a visit to any premise (RMIT/Industry). This is essential to organise any required permits.

Important note: 1. Our data analytics projects require industry to have data ready for our students to work on, or clear instructions to direct students to locate/obtain data source (for example, survey, website like ABS or others. 2. Make sure to highlight if there are any confidential data being shared

Data sets must be easily accessible for the students to utilise without searching and sourcing the data sets
