WDEQ Groundwater Classification Requests

This form is used to request a groundwater classification from the WDEQ Water Quality Division Groundwater Section in accordance with Wyoming Water Quality Rules Chapter 8. Facilities that have documented impacts to groundwater, or have the threat of releases to groundwater shall have a groundwater classification completed.

The WQD GW Section will review the submitted information and supporting documentation and complete a final groundwater classification for the facility.

FACILITY INFORMATION

Provide information in this section related to the facility for which the groundwater classification will be completed.

Provide the facility or site name for the groundwater classification. This name should be the same as the name used to identify the facility with the applicable WDEQ program.

Identify the WDEQ program that has the oversight for the facility.

Provide the permit number for the facility.

Provide the County the facility is located within.

Provide the name and email of the person requesting the classification.

GEOLOGIC INFORMATION

Information regarding the geology at the facility should be provided.

Geologic information must contain the geologic unit name, lithology, depth, and thickness of the water-bearing unit.

Additional information to attach includes a geologic map, borehole logs, depth to groundwater and information on seasonal fluctuations, the lateral and vertical extent of the aquifer, aquifer information including the degree of confinement, boundary conditions.

Requests lacking this information will be returned.

Are there monitoring wells at the facility completed into and screened within the aquifer of concern.

REVIEW OF GROUNDWATER USES

Review SEO logs to verify if any SEO permitted wells are located within 1-mile of the facility. A table of SEO well information (i.e. permit number, permitted well use, location information, total depth, and screened interval) and a figure showing the well locations in relation to the facility and groundwater flow direction needs to be included.

If there are no permitted SEO wells within 1-mile of the facility, an aerial photo of the location depicting a 1-mile radius and groundwater flow direction must be provided.

Requests lacking this information will be returned,

GROUNDWATER QUALITY INFORMATION

Provide information regarding water quality data supplied as part of the groundwater classification request.

Note: Groundwater data must be collected from wells screened within the same aquifer and located upgradient of the facility.

Water quality data should be for Chapter 8, Table 1 list of constituents. Attach a table of groundwater quality data and laboratory reports.

A preliminary groundwater classification can be determined based on the following parameters: aluminum*, arsenic, boron, cadmium, chloride, chromium, copper, lead, manganese*, nitrate, selenium, sulfate, and total dissolved solids.

Parameters identified with a * are not used to determine if groundwater does not meet Class I standards if all other constituents meet Class I.

Classifications based on quality can be revised with submittal of additional data, and or a complete Chapter 8, Table 1 list of analysis.

Provide information regarding what monitoring wells the provided groundwater quality data was collected from.

It has been indicated that the groundwater quality data is from a well that is not located upgradient of the facility or facility activities that may cause impacts to groundwater. Do not submit a groundwater classification request until appropriate groundwater quality data is available.

Attach the required information to support the information provided above. Groundwater Classification requestss lacking the required information will be returned.
