BloomAgainBklyn

Description: BloomAgainBklyn's mission is to reduce social isolation and loneliness among vulnerable populations by creating connections and building community through repurposed flowers. We are a volunteer organization that takes a wasted asset and turns it into an impactful instrument of giving and hope. Founder Caroline Anderson’s vision is that flowers can be a powerful vehicle to foster and facilitate dialogue and interaction among generations—young, old and in-between— and to forge meaningful bonds while building community and giving back to those at-risk.

We were incorporated in 2015 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. BloomAgainBklyn began with one donation of flowers from Trader Joe’s, twelve volunteers wanting to give back, and one local nursing home in Brooklyn. Eight years later, we have expanded our circle of “people helping people” working side-by-side with more than 80 community organizations and 2,500 volunteers, and we are still growing.

Dancing Classrooms

Dancing Classrooms offers afterschool Social Dance Clubs to students in grades K-8, where students can come together to play games and learn social dance while building friendships and community through creative collaboration. Dancing Classrooms also offers in-school residencies that introduce students to social dances while building critical SEL skills: the in-school Social Ballroom residency for 4th-8th graders, and a Dancing with Rhythms & Stories for K-2nd graders.

Dancing Classrooms offers two afterschool Social Dance Clubs:

The Latin Social Dance Club, and The Hip-Hop Social Dance Club. Offered as stand-alone club offerings, or throughout an entire semester, students meet 2x a week for 45-60 minutes, for a minimum of 16 sessions. Students learn the movements, rhythms and cultural origins of three or more dances through scaffolded, engaging instruction and developmentally appropriate activities. Each program ends with a sharing or celebration for students to show what they have learned, which can be incorporated into larger afterschool events, or be more informal. Social Dance Clubs are designed and taught by experienced Teaching Artists, with each specific site and student group in mind. As such, availability may be limited, and consistent attendance and participation are essential to success.

  • The Latin Social Dance Club explores dances from different cultures with an emphasis on making connections to yourself and your community through movement. Possible dances/genres include: merengue, tango, rumba, salsa, cha-cha, bachata, bomba, samba, cumbia, Afro-Cuban, and West African.

  • The Hip-Hop Social Dance Club explores the anthropology of Black social dance and how it has evolved over time. Possible dances/genres include: West African, Charleston, Lindy Hop, Swing, Jazz, Old-School, and New School.

In-school (Beacon or Community School):

During a Dancing Classrooms residency our Teaching Artists celebrate the diversity of dance and create inclusive spaces for students of all backgrounds, abilities, and gender identities. They model behaviors that offer young people a place to thrive and engage in the joy, discipline and teamwork of social dance. DC offers three in-school residency opportunities:

  • Dancing with Rhythms & Stories (K-2): Our newly developed program for younger dancers uses creative movement to introduce the basic elements of dance, while building important habits of learning, helping make classrooms engaging and fun for students. Through guided exploration of patterns in music and movement from social and folk dances from across the globe, students collaborate to create dances, are able to respectfully learn about other cultures, and celebrate their own creativity. Classes meet 2x a week for 45 minutes in a classroom setting, for 16 sessions, culminating in an open-class style sharing for friends and family. Like all Dancing Classrooms programs, Dancing with Rhythms & Stories sparks imagination, builds confidence, encourages self-expression, and strengthens coordination and communication skills.
  • The Social Ballroom Residency (Core Program for 4-8th grade): Our tried-and-true intro-to-ballroom program made famous in “Mad Hot Ballroom”, proven to foster engagement, teamwork and confidence! During its 10-week, 20-session residencies, the Dancing Classrooms Core Residency Program transforms young people with a concentration in the areas of maturity, self-reliance, and creative expression. Through creative, carefully scaffolded lessons students learn the techniques, origins and language of various iconic styles of American Style Ballroom dances, including merengue, foxtrot, tango, rumba, swing, waltz, and various line dances. Residencies include interactive assignments and connections to non-dance curriculum, and finish with a celebratory culminating event for family and friends.
  • Social Dance Intensives (6-8th grade): Taught by experienced DC Teaching Artists, these specialized residencies allow 6th - 8th students to fully immerse themselves in the world of social dance and enhance their repertoire. Students meet 2x a week for 45-60 minutes, for a minimum of 11 sessions (including a final sharing), and explore the dances and origins of 1-3 social dances.

Please note, all Dancing Classrooms programs meet twice weekly, and a minimum of 2 classes (or 90 mins) must be booked. Availability is dependent on Teaching Artist availability, which may chance each term/season.

We build our own culture and ensure that kindness and tolerance are at the forefront of everything we do. Youth voice and choice are central to every activity. Our arts-based activities are always "process over product", giving youth space to problem solve and create their work. Educators guide youth to find their own answers and determine how they want to work with the materials available. Not only are youth highly engaged in project work but they feel a sense of belonging and safety in the class.
