Job Description

Job Title: Student Ambassador

Department: Marketing and Undergraduate Recruitment (Registrar’s Office)

Reports To: Lyliana Vu, Visitors Centre Supervisor Hourly Wage: $18/hr

Effective Date: November 19th, 2024


Primary Purpose: ​Student Ambassadors promote the University of Waterloo to prospective students and families in various ways such as conducting campus tours, responding to online and in-person inquiries, working recruitment events and processing requests for brochures sent out with personalized letters to each student. By giving campus tours and interacting with visitors, Student Ambassadors are the face of the University of Waterloo and are instrumental in our efforts to engage with future undergraduate students, visitors and the Waterloo community.


Key Accountabilities:

Represent the University of Waterloo

  • Represent the University of Waterloo as an Ambassador.
  • Promote our campus and community to prospective students and families.
  • Provide detailed information and an outstanding customer experience to all individuals in the Visitors Centre.
  • Learn the campus tour script and conduct experiential walking and/or virtual tours of the campus.

Assist with Events

  • Be available to work at special campus visit events including Fall Open House, March Open House, March Break week tours (when not in class), and You @ Waterloo Day.
  • Support the University of Waterloo booth at the Ontario Universities Fair.
  • Facilitate special and large group tours for recruitment partners and school groups.

Provide Administration Support

  • Work in the Visitors Centre processing information and brochure requests.
  • Assist with requests for information by telephone and e-mail.
  • Greet and help drop-in visitors with wayfinding and questions.
  • Support in Visitors Centre with preparation for on-campus recruitment events.

Required Qualifications:

Education:

  • Must be a University of Waterloo Undergraduate student in satisfactory academic standing

Experience:

  • Must be an involved and active member of the UWaterloo student community (clubs, committees, athletics, on-campus jobs)

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Experience with customer service an asset
  • Experience in public speaking an asset
  • Experience with Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel and Outlook
  • CRM experience an asset (not required)
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Must be eligible to work in Canada


Nature and Scope:


​​Contacts:​ ​Campus departments, faculties, schools, student clubs/associations, student services, future students, parents, agents, and Education professionals ​


​​Level of Responsibility:​ ​Work with fellow student ambassadors, communicate on behalf of the Visitors Centre, respond to customer inquiries, communicate the University’s brand​


​​Decision-Making Authority:​ ​Take direction from the Visitors Centre Supervisor with a high degree of initiative ​


​​Physical and Sensory Demands:​ ​Attention to detail, high degree of collaboration, strong communication and time management skills. Guiding 45-90 minute outdoor tours across campus, lifting up to 30 pounds, and working outdoors is required.​


​​Working Environment:​ ​Office based, outdoor tours, with occasional out-of-office on- and off-campus events ​

To be considered for this Student Ambassador role, you must be in “Satisfactory” academic standing or higher and making satisfactory progress toward the completion of your degree. Additionally, you must have no major incidents or serious allegations of academic or non-academic misconduct noted in the campus incident system (CIS) as assessed by your Associate Dean. In cases where minor incidents are noted, it is also at the discretion of the Associate Dean whether or not to proceed. This could include cases where a student has shown growth and learning from the incident or if the offence was unintentional. There also may be housing records in the CIS that may be taken into account.
