Petition for Exception to Academic Calendar Deadlines & Withdrawal Limits

ACADEMIC REGULATION 57. STUDENT PETITIONS FOR EXCEPTIONS TO ACADEMIC CALENDAR DEADLINES AND WITHDRAWAL LIMITS. Students may, with the payment of a service fee, petition for exceptions to the academic calendar deadlines (e.g., withdrawal after the deadline) or petition for withdrawal from an individual course after the student has used the maximum number allowed. Petitions are considered only in the case of extraordinary circumstances such as a medical emergency and require supporting documentation.


Further information is available at the Campus Registrar Petitions website. Undergraduate and professional students may petition through the Registrar's Office. Graduate students may petition through the Graduate School. Petitions for exceptions to the academic calendar deadlines and withdrawal limits must be made within two (2) years of the date of enrollment in the course.

Drop course(s) without transcript record

Normal drop deadline is the 20th day of fall and spring semesters, per Academic Regulations 67 and 68 in the WSU Catalog.


Verification on either no class participation or last date of attendance is REQUIRED to drop a course(s) without record. This includes NON-attendance as well.

Final grade of "W"

Normal withdrawal period is from the 31st day of fall and spring semesters through the 13th week, per Academic Regulations 67 and 68 in the WSU Catalog.

Withdraw from all courses in a term

A withdrawal fee will apply, excluding summer. See Academic Regulation 10 in the WSU Catalog. Note: To withdraw from a term you're currently enrolled in (first day through the Friday before finals week), submit a CURRENT TERM WITHDRAWAL.

Exceed 4 course withdrawals limit

At the end of each term, the number of withdrawals will be counted for undergraduate and professional students. Once four (4) withdrawals have been used, no further withdrawals will be allowed in subsequent terms. Withdrawals that result from the cancellation of enrollment will not be counted. Complete term withdrawals do not count towards this limit.

Provide a brief description of the reasons for your request AND THE OUTCOME YOU SEEK by filing this petition. Include specific dates of your extenuating circumstances (e.g., illness, doctor visit, advisor meetings) in your statement.

For any medical documentation, the committee requires a letter(s) on letterhead from your healthcare provider that includes a brief description of your medical condition, approximate date the condition began, and how the condition affected your ability to function academically. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE COMMITTEE ONLY NEEDS A LETTER ON LETTERHEAD FROM YOUR HEALTHCARE PROVIDER AND WILL NOT REVIEW MEDICAL RECORDS (including post-appointment summaries).
