Welcome

The Get Moving Houston Urban Gardens (GMHUG) provide hands-on experience in vegetable gardening and urban agriculture to community members and encourage the consumption of local fruits and vegetables. Our gardens are located in many of Houston’s underserved communities, and we believe community gardens not only improve the neighborhood, it helps the city become a beautiful and productive place to live for everyone!

There are no fees associated with joining the garden clubs sponsored by the Houston Health Department (HHD). The following rules are enforced:

1. Participants must register for the garden of their choice. Gardeners can register at only one HHD garden at a time.

2. Active gardening reflects all seasons. Garden club members are recommended to contribute at least (24) hours per year to their selected urban garden. They may assist in winterization, filling the raised beds with soil, planting, weeding, watering, maintaining and harvesting at their urban garden. Garden club members that are physically unable to assist in gardening tasks could be assigned other duties such as weighing produce, member recruitment or designated garden docent (publicity/tour guide).

3. Planting and harvesting times are coordinated with HHD. Members are not allowed to harvest produce from the gardens at their own discretion. Garden club members that do not adhere to the harvesting schedule may be suspended from participation in the club.

4. The HHD urban garden program is an organic gardening program. Use of pesticides, herbicides and insecticides made from synthetic materials as well as chemical fertilizers are not suggested. Garden club members should not bring their own natural fertilizers for use in HHD urban gardens except as approved by the Garden Manager.

5. Garden club members may establish guidelines for sharing in each harvest based on participation or distribute equally among members. Members will be notified by their garden representative when each harvest will occur.

6. Garden club members are responsible for helping keep walk and pathways clear of garden debris. Gardens should not appear unattended or abandoned for extended periods.

7. If a garden club member happens to witness vandalism or theft, he or she shall report it to the garden manager. At no time should a club member attempt to stop the person.

8. Smoking and alcohol consumption are not permitted on City of Houston property.

9. Garden club member behavior must reflect well on HHD and the community. Members that engage in unacceptable behavior will be asked to leave the property and their club membership will be revoked.

10. While input will be sought from garden club members, produce to be planted will be coordinated by HHD.
