About OnRamps

OnRamps is one of The University of Texas at Austin’s signature initiatives designed to expand access to high-quality educational opportunities across the state of Texas. We offer distance education through a dual enrollment model for high school students to engage in authentic college experiences. Our mission is to increase the number of students who access and engage in learning experiences aligned with the expectations of leading research universities. The OnRamps Rhetoric two-course, two-semester writing sequence includes eight major essays that are evaluated with substantive revision feedback by our Writing Assessment Specialist team for the 2024-25 academic year.


The Position

OnRamps Rhetoric Writing Assessment Specialists contribute to the OnRamps mission through timely and thoughtful feedback on college research, analysis, and revision essays. Writing Assessment Specialists deliver comments and scoring via Canvas SpeedGrader. Instructors of Record provide rubrics and scoring calibration. Writing Assessment Specialists must attend an online calibration meeting at the start of each assessment period. Affiliates must provide their own computers and Wi-Fi access

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree or higher in Rhetoric, Composition, English, Comparative Literature, or 18 graduate-level credits in a related field.


• Qualified candidates must have previously taught a first-year rhetoric-focused research and writing course at an accredited university (example: example: UT Austin’s RHE 306/309J; an ENGL 1301/1302 course in Texas; or equivalent).


• Background check required of successful candidates.


• Ability to meet deadlines.


• Excellent communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Proficiency in Learning Management Systems such as Canvas or Blackboard

Eligibility Note

OnRamps Writing Assessment Specialists must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time or part-time basis for any employer. In most cases, an F-1 visa does not make you eligible to be an OnRamps Writing Assessment Specialist.

Compensation

Writing Assessment Specialists who successfully complete all assigned 2024-25 assessments, with an average grading load of 30 essays per assignment, generally start between $2,251 - $2,370 per year. Each candidate can elect to request a higher load which would increase compensation. All grading assignments are contingent upon enrollment.


Note: After completing one full academic year of service, Writing Assessment Specialists have the opportunity to apply for Special Teams for additional compensation as well as update experience and qualifications, which also affects compensation. Grading team members can also update the number of assessments for which they are available to grade for the new academic year.

Course Workload Preferences & Availability

We recommend budgeting 25-30 minutes per essay as you estimate your time. The average minimum grading load is 30 essays per assignment. Grading loads of 50 essays per assignment or more can be spread across multiple grading schedules as enrollment allows.
