Weather Data API Questions
Thank you for taking AgGateway’s Weather Data API Survey. We are currently working on a specific challenge that has been identified by the industry regarding exchanging weather data, and we need feedback from experts like you.
Our goal through this survey is to better understand how the industry is currently exchanging weather data to inform the development of an API based on existing work from AgGateway’s Precision Agriculture Industry Language (PAIL) ISO 7673 projects.
AgGateway had been working for several years to develop a standard for observations and measurements used to inform principled irrigation decision making as well as documenting the recommendations, work orders, and work records used with irrigation equipment. This survey seeks to take the final step to implement the work as a standardized API the industry can use for more efficient weather data exchange.
How do you interact with weather data?
What is the trend in volume of data being transferred?
How many variables (e.g. temperature, humidity) are typically requested
Regarding data exchange formats: are larger, human-readable text files preferred, or do you prioritize smaller binary files?
What time intervals between data points are you currently able to request from providers?
What is the most common time interval between data points requested?
What time period between data points do you provide to consumers.
What time period between data points is most commonly requested?
How quickly can gridded observations be made available based on processing, cleaning, and other factors.
How quickly do consumers expect gridded data to be available within a system from when it was collected?
What spatial resolution is typically requested?
What spatial search methods are generally available today?
What method(s) do you prefer when preforming a spatial search?
What methods do you currently provide for users to preform a spatial search?
What spatial search method(s) are most commonly requested by users?
What serialization formats are currently used, CSV, SHP, GeoJSON, GeoParquet, GeoTiff etc.
What data serialization formats have you investigated or plan to implement in the future?
How much weather data do you receive via API per day?
How much weather data does your system provide via API per day on average?
