Tutor Requirements & Information


Eligibility:


Social Security Card:

All tutors must possess a U.S. Social Security card issued by the Social Security Administration. Identity verification documents are also required.


Academic Standing:

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA at Grayson College (GC).
  • Minimum 4.0 GPA in any course you wish to tutor.


Foundational Skills: Demonstrated mastery of reading, writing, and mathematics, with passing scores on assessment tests (e.g., TSI Assessment).


Faculty Recommendation: A GC faculty recommendation is required for a minimum of one of the courses you'll tutor. The Tutoring Coordinator will contact the faculty member directly.


Interpersonal Skills: Tutors need strong interpersonal skills and effective communication abilities.


Training:


Mandatory Training: Participation in tutor training sessions is required.

  • Level 1: Complete within your first two regular semesters of tutoring. This includes 10 hours of paid training and 30 hours of tutoring.
  • Level 2: Can be completed the following semester. This includes an additional 10 hours of paid training and another 30 hours of tutoring.


Pay Increases: Your rate of pay increases as you complete each training level.


Training Location: Sessions are held at the Testing/Tutoring Center on the Main Campus during the Fall and Spring semesters, unless a larger room is necessary.


Training Levels:

  • Level 1: New tutors attend all 5 sessions on selected Fridays and complete a class audit during Fall or Spring.
  • Level 2: A Level 1 completer attends all 3 sessions on selected Fridays during the subsequent long semester, plus 4 additional hours of individual training.


Availability & Scheduling:


Tutor availability is posted on Upswing (https://grayson.upswing.io), where GC students can view tutor profiles and hours of availability and schedule in-person or online sessions.


Tutors can work up to 19 hours per week, with schedules based on tutor and tutee availability.

To advance as a tutor, you must complete 10 hours of Level 1 training. If you can't make the scheduled dates, you can attend training next semester. Once you pass a criminal background check and receive a job offer, you'll be paid for your training hours at the current hourly rate.

Prospective Tutors: Please list the name(s) of the Grayson College faculty member(s) who can recommend you as a tutor. The Tutoring Coordinator will contact them.


Returning Tutors: Type N/A.
