J-1 Scholar Application

Thank you for your interest in obtaining a J-1 visa in affiliation with San Diego State University. The J-1 visa program is governed by terms and conditions set by the United States Customs and Immigration Service, which you may review here. This form must be completed in full and supporting documentation provided prior to the issuance of a DS 2019. Required documents include a J-1 Sponsorship Agreement to be signed and provided by your SDSU faculty sponsor. Please contact your College Representative with questions.


Please provide the following in PDF format:

  • A copy of the J1 Sponsor Agreement.
  • A copy of your invitation / offer letter (provided by Faculty Sponsor)
  • A copy of your C.V.
  • A copy of your passport biographical page
  • A copy of the passport biographical page for each of your J-2 dependents (if applicable)
  • One document verifying each funding source and amount (may include official letters, bank statements, etc.) With exchange rate conversion if applicable. If funding by SDSURF, no documentation needed.
  • Copy of ONE document verifying English language proficiency (copy of passport from Australia, Belize, Canada [except Quebec], Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, New Zealand, Nigeria, Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Tanzania, UK, Zimbabwe; OR; copy of degree or signed letter confirming completion of degree at accredited US university; OR prior J-1 stay DS-2019; OR copy of qualifying TOEFL score of 80 (iBT) / 550 (PBT) / 6.5 IELTS; OR Faculty Sponsor attests to your English Proficiency in the invitation letter requested.
  • If INTERN selected, you should have received a completed DS-7002 from Faculty Sponsor to submit.


Incomplete applications cannot be processed.


Applications submitted less than 3 months ahead of program start date will not be accepted.


Please provide degree, field of study, and date received (eg., Ph.D., Statistics, 2021)

If you are employed, please provide the name of your employer and your job title (eg., Autonomous University of Baja California, postdoctoral researcher).

If you have previously been in the US as a J-1 scholar, please provide your dates of employment. (If you have not previously been in the US as a J-1, you may leave this blank.)

Please provide name, relationship, date of birth, city and country of birth, and country of citizenship for any legal spouse and / or unmarried children under 21 years of age who may accompany you as a J-2 dependent.


If you will not be accompanied by J-2 dependents, please indicate "not applicable" / "NA."

Required minimum funding levels for J-1 visitors and J-2 dependents are as follows:

  • $2,400 / month (J1 research scholar / professor / short-term scholar)
  • $2,207 / month (J1 graduate student intern)
  • $2,012 / month (J1 undergraduate student intern)
  • $800 / month (J2 dependent spouse)
  • $400 / month / child (J2 dependent unmarried child under 21)


Please list all anticipated sources and amounts of funding, including SDSU / SDSU Research Foundation, US Government Agency, Exchange Visitor Government, Other Organizations, or Personal Funds. If foreign currency evidence provided, please provide a copy of currency exchange rate. Funds should cover entire duration of program.

Please note that you may arrive within a 30 day grace period before or after your start date. If you miss this grace period, you will need to submit a new application.

I acknowledge the following terms and conditions:

  • I must be in direct contact with my faculty sponsor throughout my stay in the US.
  • I must not travel without completing the Travel Notification Form two weeks prior.
  • I and / or my dependents must not travel outside of the US without completing the Travel Notification Form two weeks prior and receiving signed authorization from Faculty Advancement.
  • I must report any change of address, email, or phone to Faculty Advancement within 10 days.
  • I must only work or conduct research at SDSU; any other employment including SDSU Research Foundation work must be reviewed and approved in advance via a J-1 Amendment Request Form.
  • Failure to comply with these regulations may result in termination of my J-1 Scholar program.

I certify that I will maintain adequate health insurance during my J-1 exchange visitor program at SDSU in accordance with US Department of State regulations [22 CFR 62.4(a)] with minimum coverage as follows:

  • Medical benefits of at least $100,000 per accident or illness;
  • Repatriation of remains benefits of at least $25,000;
  • Medical evacuation benefits of at least $50,000;
  • Deductibles not to exceed $500 per accident or illness.

Failure to comply with these health insurance requirements may result in termination of my J-1 program.
