Regarding VSC-0002: Working Safely with Nonhuman Primates (NHP)

Training is required for all who work with nonhuman primates, including unfixed tissue, blood, bodily fluids, and cell lines.


For anyone working with live nonhuman primates:



For anyone working with nonhuman primate samples only (such as unfixed tissue, blood, bodily fluids, or cell lines):


  • Enrollment in the Laboratory Animal Occupational Health Program and consultation with EH&S is required
  • To enroll, people working with nonhuman samples should be added to the “Personnel” section of the relevant APLAC animal use protocol. During the protocol review process, a comment will be sent with further information for LAOHP enrollment and EH&S consultation

Prerequisites Needed: Mouse Breeding

Registrants must have completed the following prerequisites before registering for the onsite training workshop.


Prerequisites:

  • VSC-0001 (Animal Care and Use Program)
  • Previous completion of the Mouse Handling Workshop (VSC-0021) or hands-on experience is required.
  • All skill levels accepted


This workshop has 2 components, VSC-0026A & VSC-0026B.


VSC-0026A, Web: Part A of the mouse breeding workshop covers mouse reproductive physiology and behavior, mouse breeding systems, and Stanford guidelines for weaning.


VSC-0026B, Hands-On: VSC-0026A must be completed before signing up for VSC-0026B. This hands-on workshop includes the following lab activities: sex identification, plug checking, tail biopsies, and ID methods.

Prerequisites Needed: Stereotaxic Surgery

Registrants must have completed the following prerequisites before registering for the onsite training workshop.


Prerequisites:

  • VSC-0001 (Animal Care and Use Program)
  • Rodent Aseptic Surgery Workshop (VSC-0022A&B) or aseptic surgery experience recommended.


This workshop includes demonstration and hands-on practice for basic stereotaxic surgery techniques in rodents. Techniques include setting up stereotaxic devices, identifying brain coordinates, and performing injections. Rodent Aseptic Surgery Workshop (VSC-0022 A & B) or aseptic surgery experience is recommended.

Prerequisites Needed: RAF I/II Animal Facility Tour

The following classes must be completed before registering for the onsite RAF I/II animal facility tour.


Prerequisites:

  • Animal Care and Use Program - (VSC-0001)
  • VSC-0010A (RAF Facility Orientation Web Training)

Prerequisites Needed: Rodent Aseptic Surgery Techniques Workshop

Registrants must have completed the following prerequisites before registering for the onsite training workshop.


Prerequisites:


  • Animal Care and Use Program - (VSC-0001)
  • VSC-0022A, Web

Prerequisites Needed: Rabbit Handling & Husbandry

Registrants must have completed the following prerequisites before registering for the onsite training workshop.


Prerequisites:

  • VSC-0001 (Animal Care and Use Program)
  • VSC-0040A (Web) must be completed before requesting to enroll in VSC-0040B.


Attendees will learn the essentials for working with rabbits in a laboratory setting. Training goals include normal and abnormal behavior, safe handling of rabbits, pre and post-operative monitoring, and basic biomethodology.

Prerequisites Needed: Clark Animal Facility Tour

The following classes must be completed before registering for the onsite Clark Animal Facility Tour.


Prerequisites:

  • Animal Care and Use Program - (VSC-0001)
  • EHS-4200 (General Safety)
  • EHS-3400 (Computer Workstation Ergonomics)
  • EHS-1900 (Chemical Safety for Laboratories)
  • EHS-1500 (Biosafety)
  • EHS-5275 (Working Safely Near Radioactive Materials)

Prerequisites Needed: Comparative Medicine Pavilion (CMP) Facility Tour

Before registering for the onsite CMP animal facility tour, the following classes must be completed.


Prerequisites:

  • Animal Care and Use Program - (VSC-0001)
  • VSC-0007A&B (CMP Facility Tour (Web) )

Prerequisites Needed: SIM Barrier/Non-Barrier Animal Facility Tour

The following classes must be completed before registering for the onsite Lorry Lokey Stem Cell Research Building (SIM-1) animal facility tour.


Prerequisites:

  • Animal Care and Use Program - (VSC-0001)


For the SIM-1 Non-Barrier Rodent Facility tour, registrants must complete the following STARs courses first:

  • VSC-0009A (SIM-1 Non-Barrier Rodent Facility Orientation Web Training)


For the SIM-1 Barrier Mouse Facility onsite tour, registrants must complete the following STARS web courses first:

  • VSC-0006A (Lorry Lokey Stem Cell Research Building Animal Facility Web Training)

Prerequisites Needed: CMP Irradiator Training

Registrants must have completed the following prerequisites before registering for the onsite training workshop.


Prerequisites:

  • Animal Care and Use Program - (VSC-0001)
  • VSC-PROG-0007A & 7B (CMP Facility Orientation)
  • EHS-1755-WEB (Radiation Safety Questionnaire)
  • Must be listed on an active APLAC protocol (If your protocol does not specify irradiation use, please explain what you will use the irradiator for, such as: cell lines)


Once you have finished taking the STARS course prerequisites and the onsite tour, apply for an iLabs account to use the CMP Irradiator here (https://stanford.ilabsolutions.com/sc/101/vsc-equipment-and-technical-services/?tab=about).

Prerequisites Needed: RAF Irradiator Training

Registrants must have completed the following prerequisites before registering for the onsite training workshop.

NHP or Neonatal Confirmation Status*

Only those who are approved to work with NHP or Neonatal sheep on an active APLAC protocol should enroll in VSC-002 or VSC-003. The VSC requires that registrants attest to one of the following below to confirm that you are approved to take this course.

However, you must have completed all necessary web-based prerequisites on STARS for all onsite orientations and workshops.


In addition, all web courses require the following prerequisite: VSC-0001 (Animal Care and Use Training Program).

  • All faculty, staff, and students involved in the use of laboratory animals are expected to complete this web-based course that reviews a training module and passes a quiz. Allow at least an hour to complete the training and 20 minutes to take the quiz.
