2023 NEA Aspiring Educator Awards Program

Fill out the form to nominate a person or chapter for a Gram-AE to recognize their outstanding work this year. Once an award type is selected, questions will populate in the form.


Award winners will be announced at the Aspiring Educators Conference this summer in Orlando. You do not have to attend the NEA Aspiring Educators Conference in order to submit a nomination.


Application deadline is Friday, April 14th.

Outstanding Local Leader

The Outstanding Local Leader Award highlights an individual who has acted as an integral leader in building their local chapters to achieve excellence. This leader has achieved, demonstrated, and inspired outstanding leadership to their Local or State Aspiring Educators chapter. For judging purposes, applications will be divided into groups based on the level of the program, Local Leader and State Leader. You may choose to nominate both a local chapter and state affiliate program, however you will need to file a separate application for each one.

Outstanding State Leader

The Outstanding State Leader Award highlights an individual who has acted as an integral leader in building their local chapters to achieve excellence. Emerging Chapter Recognition

The Emerging Chapter Recognition Award highlights the work of emerging chapters and how they engage their members in practicing the NEA Aspiring Educator Core Values (educator quality, community engagement, political action, and social justice). The Emerging Chapter Recognition will be awarded to those chapters that meet the criteria below. In order to recognize multiple diverse chapters, all chapters that submit an application and exemplify excellence throughout the year will receive this recognition.

Local Excellence Recognition

Th Local Excellence Recognition Award highlights the work of local chapters and how they engage their members in practicing the NEA Aspiring Educator Core Values (educator quality, community engagement, political action, and social justice). The Local Excellence Recognitions will be awarded to those chapters that meet the criteria below. In order to recognize multiple diverse chapters, all chapters that submit an application and exemplify excellence throughout the year will receive this recognition.

State Excellence Recognition

The State Excellence Recognition Award highlights the work of state aspiring educator programs. These statewide programs have engaged their members in practicing the NEA Aspiring Educator Core Values (educator quality, community engagement, political action, and social justice). The State Excellence Recognitions will be awarded to those programs that meet the criteria highlighted below. In order to recognize multiple diverse programs, all programs that submit an application and exemplify excellence throughout the year will receive this recognition.

  1. How did your chapter recruit a diverse membership (native people and people of color, diverse gender identities, elementary/secondary/special education, traditional/nontraditional student status, class standing, etc.)?
  2. How has your chapter focused on distributed leadership development to ensure a continuous network of emerging and engaged chapter leaders?
  3. What strategies does your chapter use to recruit, engage, and build a community of support for all members?
  1. What professional and leadership development opportunities has your local chapter provided?
  2. How does your local chapter implement the importance of a strong skill set to prepare members for their career in public education?
  3. How have the resources you offer your members better prepared them for their future classroom?
  1. What has your chapter done to engage members in the issues impacting the community?
  2. How has your chapter worked to support students and educators in the community?
  3. How has your chapter partnered with other organizations to provide community engagement activities?
  1. How would your local chapter define political action?
  2. Which political activities has your chapter engaged in?
  3. How has your local chapter educated their members on the importance of politics in education and the lives of their future students?
  1. How would your local chapter define social justice?
  2. How has your chapter worked to advocate for social justice on your campus and in your community?
  3. What social justice knowledge, advocacy, and action opportunities has your local chapter provided?

Distinguished Local Advisor

The Distinguished Local Advisor Award recognizes an individual for their dedication and service to the NEA Aspiring Educators by serving as a Chapter Advisor at the local level or the Organizer at the state level. For judging purposes, applications will be divided into groups based on the level of the program. You may choose to nominate both a local chapter advisor and state affiliate organizer, however you will need to file a separate application for each one.

Distinguished State Organizer

The Distinguished State Organizer Award recognizes an individual for their dedication and service to the NEA Aspiring Educators by serving as a Chapter Advisor at the local level or the Organizer at the state level. The State Project Award recognizes Aspiring Educators within a state who are in the progress or have completed a project that aligns and meets the goals of NEA Aspiring Educator Core Values (educator quality, community engagement, political action, and social justice).

Outstanding Local Project

The Outstanding Local Project Award recognizes Aspiring Educators within a local/chapter who are in the progress or have completed a project that aligns and meets the goals of NEA Aspiring Educator Core Values (educator quality, community engagement, political action, and social justice).


CREATE Grant Excellence Award

The CREATE Grant Excellence Award recognizes a local or statewide project that utilized the CREATE Grant to further engage and support members in practicing the NEA Aspiring Educator Core Values (educator quality, community engagement, political action, and social justice).
